Newberry Trail Report – Halfway Lake Resort – 01/10
Well, this has been an interesting week for the mid-west. It sounds like everyone had more than their share of snow. Why head north and cross the bridge to ride? We have more snow and you can go miles and miles without seeing a stop sign and frequently without spotting another sled.
This is one of the best years we have seen in a while. Last year had a slow start, but it started snowing mid-January and did not stop; we hired heavy machinery to push back our snow banks in late February. This year our snow banks already look like they did at the end of last year, so we’ve asked them to come back and move snow again.
Trails have not had much traffic and everyone is reporting awesome riding on and off the trail. A few reports of people getting buried in 4-5 feet of “bottomless” snow when pulling off trail or riding ungroomed routes. Funny thing is they are laughing when telling their stories.
We have added over 2 feet of snow since Jan 1st but have not had temps hit the 20’s in two weeks. The impending warm up is predicted to flirt with above freezing temps during the day and drop below freezing at night. If you don’t already know: this will help the groomers set the trails and contribute to thickening the hard base.
CAUTION: Trail #45 (Newberry-Tahq Falls) will be plowed starting January 8th from Skyline to Atwood Association for logging. PLEASE BE ALERT AND WATCH OUT FOR TRUCKS AND TRAIL CONDITIONS.
Surround yourself in lake effect snow and ride a different direction each day! We are located 12 mi NW of Newberry (Halfway to Lk Superior) and 7 miles south of Pine Stump Junction. Between Grand Marais and Paradise. Tahquamenon Area Snowmobile Association grooms over 125 miles of trails that interconnect to hundreds of miles of trails groomed by local associations
