Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – Evert’s Snowmobile Rentals – 12/19

This is the Keweenaw trail system report for Thursday, December 19, 2011.

The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open, but are still in poor condition. Groomers were out doing some panning over the weekend from Toivola to Copper Harbor but we still need more snow to upgrade conditions. Any trail usage should be done with extreme care until we have better snow cover as some areas still may have rocks, stumps, branches or wet areas not yet covered by snow and hazards that have not yet been identified.

There is logging on a short portion of Trails 132 and 133.

The protective mat on the Portage Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock will be installed as soon as there is enough snow available to cover it. Please drive carefully on the metal grating until the mat is installed…..do NOT use the ice.

Please be aware that if you snowmobile on U.S. Coast Guard property you could face federal trespass charges.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.

Snowfall & Weather Report:
Houghton county – 9 inches on the ground, 57 inches fallen to date
Keweenaw county –11 inches on the ground, 42 inches fallen to date
