1/1/25- Good morning and Happy New Year!
There is winter weather advisory for Central Chippewa County until noon tomorrow. What this means for the Soo is yet to be seen. I would expect that areas of our trail system to our west like Raco and Bay Mills will see more than the Soo will.
As I’ve been mentioning, we still have a solid base from the Soo west to Brimley, Raco, up to 889 in Bay Mills. Based on reports from riders yesterday, fire roads in the Raco area are still snow covered too.
I know that areas south lost most of the snow. Trail 49 from the Soo to Gaines Hwy is very wet, especially south of 12 mile. Also very wet behind Kewadin Casino to Ashmun on the city trails.
Please do not ride in those areas. If you do, use extreme caution and be prepared to get stuck. It’s a long walk to get help. There is a side road near Kewadin to get around and over to where the trail picks up by the high school, but I’m not sure how wet it is on that trail either.
I haven’t heard anything from the Kinross area around the airport, so I’d love if anyone down that way could check in on how the base is looking down that way.
In summary, the northern and western parts of our trail system held up, and will benefit the most from incoming snow.
As a reminder, most city streets in the Soo ARE legal to ride with a few exceptions.

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> A much cloudier day over the UP compared to yesterday! Light snow showers have been observed today with only a half inch so far at the office here in Negaunee Township. Attention then turns to a widespread system snow that will develop from west to east across Upper Michigan later Saturday afternoon and evening. The snow will continue Saturday night, then diminish during Sunday morning. Snow accumulations across Upper Michigan by late Sunday morning should range from 2 to 5 inches.
