Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 12/21

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/21

12/21- winter solstice city trail groom!

Jay and I headed out to hit the city trails, some sections for the very first time this season. Temps ranged from 5 to -1 while we were out, and that worked in our favor in the wet areas. The couple of spots that we busted through should freeze up nicely, and already were on our return trip. We did not go to Kewadin Casino or the high school. Sounds like sleds are now getting through OK, but it’s still too wet for the Tucker and the drag. There is a side road near Kewadin that you can use if you want to avoid the trail until we can get in there. Remember, most city streets are legal to ride.

We made 2 passes in the areas where we had not been previously. It’s still bumpy, but much better than it was. We’ll need at least 2 more passes to get it flat, I’d say.

We are supposed to get a few inches of snow tomorrow into Monday, then we slowly warm up and the potential for rain after Christmas looks likely👎🏼

But, hopefully it’s short lived, and the work we’ve put in to help pack a base will pay off.

We stopped at the I500 track to check their progress. It’s looking great! Especially for 12/21!

There are some frozen ice balls from the city plows near road crossings, and we did what we could to bust ‘em up. You just have to use caution as it is still early season after all.

As always, we’ll keep you posted as things change.

Remember to subscribe to Groomer Tracker to see where we’ve been, and to help support the club.

Thank you to all who support us! ❄❄❄

It’s not pretty folks. Big thanks to Turbo for sending these pics of the trail crossings on 8 from the Soo to Brimley. All rain here today. South of the soo, trailso are showing dirt in Kinross😔 Snow is supposedly moving in, and it’s going to get cold so the trails will be solid ice.
We’ll keep you posted! Just west in areas such as Paradise, they were getting snow. More west was getting significant snow, so

So far, all rain here in the Soo😭
It’s supposed to switch over to snow tonight. Obviously, grooming is on pause, and trails will be very icy once temps drop and this all freezes. No doubt the trails all took a hit, but we’ll update when we can on how things shake out.
The snow line isn’t too far to our west, so areas over that way should be in much better shape.

Can anyone help a troll newb? I'm driving from Oakland County and want to make a day trip to someplace I can travel home and back on the same day. Can anyone recommend a ridable trail that got fresh snow closest to the bridge?

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 3/3/25
Good evening!
I have some mixed news, as is usually the case this time of the year. I took a ride down 49 from the Soo to Kinross to see our friends at The Well Diggers Ass. Also hit 472 to 494 around the airport in Kinross.
The city trails, trail 49 to 9 mile, and trail 8 were excellent with lots of base and snow coverage. 49 gets thin south of 9, with dirt patches showing in the parts where the sun hit. D

Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 12/20

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/20

12/20 update! Double report for ya since I was too busy to get it out sooner😉

We had two runs done today, with 2 more tonight. First up, Brimley Bill in the Bay Mills/Raco area-

“With the temperature back down, I groomed the Power-line (part of trail 8 ) and Trail 889 (Mission Hill Loop) this morning. We have also started grooming part of the Bay Mills Casino courtesy trail. We are only grooming the section parallel to Plantation Road. (See the first photo). It’s still too wet to groom where the trail goes through the campground.

Considering the thaw we just had, the trails really groomed nice and look great”

Next up, Lane was over in the kinross area, on the Kinross west loop to the Spile Dam-

“Groomed Kinross west this morning. Made a path through the pile of snow on 472 near Centerline Rd. There were some very deep ruts on 472 from a wheeled vehicle that I smoothed out. The water holes on 480 are pretty much filled up. There was not a lot of snow to work with but got some good things done on that trail and it is looking very good.

Added a couple pictures of the ruts and one of the wet spots filled in.”

And Lane loves grooming sonic that now he’s out on the east kinross loop! I think he’s got the most time in the seat so far this season!

🚨 reminder! The city trails and trail 49 Soo to Kinross have not been groomed yet. Behind Kewadin Casino is very wet. You will need to go on the side road from their lot, or trailer. I will update when I have more to share!🚨

Thank you to all of our volunteers! Working with what we have as long as we can!

Get out and enjoy! ❄❄❄
