St. Ignace Trail Report – Straits Area Snowmobile Club – 01/29

2 days ago trails were in excellent shape. Everything was groomed board flat, and we were still packing from last Monday’s storm. We needed to widen the trails out some, but still in excellent shape. Today? More snow on them Yay! After yesterday’s 5in or so of snow, and 25-25 mph winds, there is certainly that were blown clean, and guaranteed places that are drifted bad.

The bad news is, honestly I am not sure if we will be running before Friday. If you watch the news, the governor declared a state of emergency with the temps and wind chill. It is barley above zero today and will be much worse tomorrow. Several of my drivers are digging out from the storm or dealing with frozen pipes. Family first here. If you didn’t know in these temps it can be dangerous if the groomer breaks down. All of the glass is wonderful to see, however if the tractor were to break down the cab goes sub zero in about 15 minutes, much faster than we could get to someone in a remote area.

So to sum up. Trails were excellent. Now they have more snow, are likely drifted. We will run the groomers as soon as the drivers get there home lives secured, and it is safe to do so. It will be back to excellent by Saturday for sure.

On a separate note, I would LOVE to heard from the 2 groups of 5/6 riders that went by the office yesterday in the height of the storm. The tails of that ride should be interesting!

St. Ignace Trail Report – Straits Area Snowmobile Club – 01/24

Just a quick update and I will do more later.

Over the last couple of days we received over a foot of new snow. Non of it is really packy, some sugar, some light, some just strange.

Groomers are running, and there are zero problems in the trails, all rated very good condition. The concern now is to get it all packed down, as it seems like loose snow. The smooth trails may get bumpy with use until we can get it all packed and froze down.

Temps this weekend are going to go back down to single digits. Be aware that if the temps drop to -10s, I will cancel groomer runs to same people and equipment, but other than that we should be running every day.

Be safe, be courteous, and if you see a groomer get out of his way please.

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/2/2025
Light snow falling today, and a much quieter day on the trails than yesterday. We double and sometimes triple groomed yesterday to keep up with traffic. Sounds like everything really held up well! The trails were like concrete on my way to the track yesterday LOL. Thank you to Mike and Paula for coming in super early, all the way from Barbeau to get the city trails done before 7 am. I was the first sled on them and they were flat as could be!
Today, I got a report from Brimley Bill after his run. Things are looking excellent!
“I groomed the Mission Hill Route this morning (part of 8, part of 480, and all of 889). The extra grooming yesterday really made a difference. For the morning after the I-500, the trails were not too beat up. I was able to get everything real smooth, even the twisty corners on trail 889.”
Thank you again to all of our operators, scheduling coordinators, and our mechanics for keeping our trails and equipment in tip top shape! We were humbled to be awarded snowmobile club of the year, and it’s because of the team that we have.
Also a shout out to our neighboring clubs who kept things smooth beyond our trail system. The I500 brings a lot to the entire area, and they were prepared to deal with the extra traffic as well.
Great job everyone! Riders, we hope you enjoyed your time here!

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/2/25
Another report for you, this time from Sugar Island Chris and Karen after their groom on 49 from the Soo to Kinross and back. Here’s what Chris had to say-
“Karen and I just finished 49 Soo to Kinross , lots of new snow and drifting but groomed up well and was able to take out the small chatter.”
Chris, Tammy, Brian, Kurt, and Dan also worked the booth in the vendor tent at the I500 yesterday and helped raise a lot of money for the club. Also to Karen for helping prepare! Huge thanks to them, and to all who stopped to help support us! #soo #snowphotos
