St. Ignace Trail Report – Straits Area Snowmobile Club – 01/12

BOOM. Poor to Excellent in 48 hrs, with basically one groom. All we needed was those 2 storms, and a little work. The little extra snow storm from yesterday topped things off with a cool 4″ in Iggy, 7″ in Moran 10″ in Epoufette and in teh core of the system. Between teh storms this week we have got between 8″ & 16″ of new snow across our system. After working things over we have an easy 8″ of hard pack over and ice base. Everything is flat fast and raring to go. It is flat out easy to do updates when conditions end up this good, so it is time to pack things up, leave those narrow and crowded downstate trails and head North – and don’t stop until you cross the Mighty Mac. Forecast for this weekend is perfect for riding, and the groomers are running – and shifting into a more normal schedule now.

Trail issues to be aware of:
The snow is a bit thinner for about 1 mile North of Iggy on trail 2. Don’t worry it is just that open area we usually have issues with and you will be fine by the time you hit 471. On the Southeast end of 471 they are plowing a few miles for an on-again-off again logging operation (Castle Rock & Round Lake roads.) They plow, we groom, rinse and repeat. The trail is still perfectly passable, and in good condition – just not the super awesome trail it usually is. And the groomer got stuck in the mud hole on the side of the road just South of trout lake. Avoid the cat-tail area and ride the shoulder for 100′, you will be fine.

Off our trail: East towards Cedarville – they still have some issues with their swamps – check their conditions before heading that way.
TASA trail from Rexton to Trout Lake has mud holes open, better to drop down onto our trail if going between those 2 spots. Although a bit longer, our trail is faster, so about the same time to take that route.

Lots going on here this morning, so just a couple of quick pics, first shows how much snow we got since last weekend, my shed roof was clear last saturday. And the other 2 are just outside of the overpass in Iggy.
If you are done reading this, just one question: Do you have the truck packed yet?

St. Ignace Trail Report – Straits Area Snowmobile Club – 01/05

Status quo around here. We got about 1″ of new snow last night, and things are holding steady. Cold Icy, and thin, but rideable. Top it off with 6″ of system snow and you can change ‘fair’ to ‘excellent’ in 12 hours. Nothing new to groom out there, and with the ice base, and little snow, not much of a reason to groom right now out of Iggy – it is thin, but ridable. I have only seen a total of 3 out of town sleds by my office, so not much traffic on the lower loop.

Ken will be running the North section Cut River to Rexton & Trout Lake Friday night, and depending on snow conditions, we will let that sit after that if it isn’t needed.

There are no major hazards to report anywhere on our 101 miles. They are plowing Cast Rock & Round Lake roads, the Southeast couple miles of Trail #471. It is passable, very thin snow, and icy. It isn’t the all-time favorite trail that we know and love, but you can ride it out of town.

Keep the snow dance up – we can use it. If you are OK with smooth trails, thin conditions, with an ice base and want to be almost by yourself, then head on UP. Otherwise, I will let you know when we get that magic 6″ base, and are in super-highway status.
