St. Ignace Trail Report – Straits Area Snowmobile Club – 02/25

Big storm, huge. All South of us. We got zero, where only 60 miles South they got 9′. Scrooges.

OK, so you know the Bent Ski Classic Adventure Run (clue/scavenger hunt) is this weekend here. http://www.straitsareasnowmobileclub…ead.php?t=1776
So how are the trails? Well as you also know we got majorly hit last weekend, we groomed at just the right time, and everything is almost perfectly flat, there is just not much out there. Base is ranging from 2-6′, and some areas are icy. Most all of it is hard. We ran groomers last night to scratch up some cooling snow, and cover a couple problem corners – the drivers said although not ideal, we are good to go. This is late March type riding right now, so please understand what you are getting into, it isn’t perfect, but defiantly serviceable.
Town trails are a mix of hard shoulders, and bare pavement. You can get to both gas stations, but 1/2 your trip isn’t good. The RR Grade trail North of town, after the castle rock rd intersection, and all the way up to Moran is mostly gravel, so take the West side of the lower loop out of Iggy. For numbers folks, Don’t travel #2 North of #471 to Moran. North of Moran is OK though. This section of trail will need 6′ to fix it back up, where the rest is only 2-3′ to be perfect. Getting into Brevort will also necessitate some side of road riding, defiantly some pavement along there. Epoufette and Trout Lake are just fine.

Upcoming weather is just fine, kinda warm in the day, kinda cold at night. We will hold these conditions for the foreseeable future, new snow would be welcome. They are talking a small clipper system for Sun & Mon, maybe that will give us a bit of a shot.

Now I am guessing that 3/4 of the state is going to head for the heart of the storm downstate. That area is forecasted to have 40d temps this weekend, and will be a nightmare. Buck the trend, head a bit farther North, and check out our Bent Ski Classic. Registration is free, there will be a trail stop with a fire and goodies, and fun for the whole family. A great way to spend a day riding some good uncongested trails. I will be at the trail stop, and also the ending party, hope to see you there!

St. Ignace Trail Report – 02/04

Temps have cooled just a bi, and should be OK through the weekend. Things are looking pretty good around here, and I am going to rate the trails at very-good, almost excellent condition. Groomers got the heavy wet snow from Wednesday packed down and are reporting very few problems. Only thing to note is it is still pretty thin both in Moran and on the pipeline South of Brevort Lake, so leaving Iggy you will have to deal with one or the other. Both are still completely passable you may see some rocks in Moran or sand on the pipeline.

This is I-500 weekend, so expect some transient traffic, especially on Saturaday. The North Ice rink lot is closed for the next couple of weeks, so if you park in the South lot, then do so intelligently. If you run out of room you may park along the side of Ojibewa Trail, just NE of that lot, or along Cheeseman Road, which goes under the overpass. The Starline RR Dock on across from the Shell downtown would also be OK to park in for the day.

We do have some logging going on, but it isn’t really effecting us. They are plowing the entirety of Castle Rock road, (the Southeast end of #471) and the Eastern Mile of the Burma grade (Trail #2, at #47) and maybe a mile right in the middle of the Cut River Trail, between Brevort & Epoufette (#473 near the Prout Rd). (You can pick out these areas on V&V Maps on MSA Site: http://www.vvmapping.com/trails/miSn…gnace_1748.pdf

Pond Hockey Update:
TRAIL WARNING
There is currently no good lake ice around the area, and the organizers are going to attempt to create rinks at the ice rink parking lot. There will be a winding trail through the area, and you must stay on the marked trail and off the ice rinks! It is going to be very difficult to get the rinks built before the tourney, so please help out, and stay where you belong
