St. Ignace Trail Report – 03/07

Things are looking good around here. Cold nights and tepid days are the story right now. Sun and daytime temps in the very low 30s are causing some melting, but have not hurt the trails one bit. Getting into/out of town is still no issue on the main trails. Side roads have pavement, so get on the banks where you can. Trails in the woods are looking as good as ever, trails in the sun and still holding good for now. I expect them to last through next week no problem as we have 8-12” ice base, and 2-6” workable snow on top.

This weekend the temps are going to be freezing at night, and mid-30s during the day, so expect a little melting, and most likely the trails getting a bit choppy from the soft snow. Groomers will flatten things down in the late evenings so they will refreeze and be good to go the next day. Extended forecast is all over the place, some calling for snow later this weekend, others rain. Doesn’t matter that much for this weekend, trails will be in good shape. It sounds like once we get through this weekend we will be in a good just below freezing maintain mode – which will nothing but extent our season! Our club has PLENTY of grooming miles left this season, so we will be able to run right through April 1 if we don’t get any rain.

Watch for some ice to develop in the bottom of the corners by the end of the weekend, and be courteous to fellow riders. Make the most out of what we have left in a semi-successful season!

Mackinac Island Ice Bridge: Although there looks like there is a lot more ice in the straits, and appears to be frozen across to the island, that is not the case. The ice is not stable, and I have seen sheets moving in the area with different cracks developing daily. It is March, I doubt the bridge is not going to happen this year, sorry.

St. Ignace Trail Report – 03/04

Trails continue to be absolutely fantastic. Sledders I talked to over the weekend said they rode all over and found nary a bump, let alone a rough trail! We still have a strong base and good workable snow on top, with sledders telling me that we have some of the whitest trails around – meaning they should last for some time yet. A special thanks to both our guest groomers this weekend. For those who don’t know, all groomers here are volunteer, and giving the ‘regulars’ and evening off is nice.

Forecast for the coming days will continue with the fantastic riding conditions. If you have some sick days coming, I would start the fake cough now! Nighttime temps are in the low teens, with daytime in the high twenties. Trails will freeze hard and flat during the night, and take a long ware during the day. It is officially March and the days are noticeable longer now though. Roads have already started to dry up and pavement is showing in some areas. With daytime temps touching freezing by next week it may have some effect on the gravel roads. We will continue to groom trails along the shoulder and ditches wherever possible. I don’t foresee any major issues for the next 10 days. The noticeable thing is that they are not calling for any snow until this coming weekend, and it doesn’t sound certain. We can hold these trails for quite some time if we can get a nice 2-3” here and there to top them off, otherwise that hard ice base will start showing itself. We will discuss that when needed. Here is the weather that they are calling for:

Today: Scattered flurries. Mostly sunny, with a high near 28. Northwest wind around 5 mph.

Tuesday: Cloudy, with a high near 28. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the morning.

Wednesday: A chance of flurries. Cloudy, with a high near 33. Light and variable wind becoming north 5 to 10 mph in the morning.

Wednesday Night: Cloudy, with a low around 26.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22.

Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 36.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 36.

Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 34.
