Grand Marais Trail Report – 02/24
GRAND MARAIS UPDATE via Grand Marais Sno-Trails Assoc. – 02/24
Statement from GM Sno Trails
We’ve heard your complaints and frustrations about our trail system. Believe me when we say we’re frustrated too. We know our trails haven’t been up to our standards and there are explanations as to why. The last 4 days we’ve had temperatures approaching 40 degrees and not falling off in the evening. Two of our groomers attempted to groom and ended up turning around and not being able to finish because of the conditions. We do have 3 groomers headed out shortly to do the west, south and north trails tonight as the temperatures have finally dropped.
We unfortunately have a critical shortage of groomer drivers this season that is making it almost impossible to hit the entire system every night as in the past. We have drivers who own their own businesses that take up much of their time, some have full time jobs outside of grooming and we’ve had one driver down for a week due to health issues. It’s possible we may be able to pick up a groomer (already trained) in the next few days. To start training a new person this late in the season really isn’t feasible. We know this explanation doesn’t improve the trail conditions but hopefully explains it. We’re doing the absolute best that we can with what we have to work with. Please keep that in mind before commenting.
The weather has been another factor in the condition of the trails. Another warm up is predicted for Saturday and Sunday. Traffic has also played a big part. Usually it slows down during the week to allow for more time to get the trails back up to our standards. That hasn’t been the case this year. It’s been extremely busy 7 days a week. And please remember that we have the second largest trail system in the U.P. (second only to the Keweenaw) of over 260 miles. It’s a big job under perfect conditions. As of now, the plan is to hit all the trails at least once and if all goes well twice before the weekend hits. Please ride safe and take care. There have been way too many accidents this winter already!!
