LAKE GOGEBIC AREA UPDATE via Gogebic Area Grooming – 12/15
Groomer’s are in from another late night. Definitely could tell there’s been a lot of traffic on the trails! 13n, 13s, 102 and 1n were all groomed tonight. 102 all water holes have now frozen up. 13n short section wet that never really freezes over but nothing to worry about. 13s all water holes frozen in but remains thin towards the south end of the lake. 1n one swamp that hasn’t been crossed yet, but will be addressed in the next day or 2. 1s there’s one spot where water is leaching onto the trail but only a few inches deep and hasn’t been a issue. (Just ride with caution.)
Okay, 8w to Wakefield.. It’s not freezing up this year. We are going to put up detour signs to avoid this section temporarily until we can get a culvert placed and wait for snow to set it. The brief warmup shouldn’t impact us, however we will most likely hold sending out machines tonight if temperatures remain above freezing. That’s your Saturday evening Sunday morning update. ❄️❄️❄️

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> A much cloudier day over the UP compared to yesterday! Light snow showers have been observed today with only a half inch so far at the office here in Negaunee Township. Snow accumulations today will be an inch or less, except 1 to 2 inches in the high terrain of Baraga and Marquette counties. The snow showers will diminish later tonight. Attention then turns to a widespread system snow that will develop from west to east across Upper Michigan later Saturday afternoon and evening. The snow will continue Saturday night, then diminish during Sunday morning. Snow accumulations across Upper Michigan by late Sunday morning should range from 2 to 5 inches. We're still down to one machine until most likely Monday, but at this moment 102 and 1n are being groomed then 13n to 101 and 8w to Wakefield.. ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Scott's Superior Inn and Cabins >> A Ride to Remember with a True Trail Legend
Some rides are just special, and today was one of them. I had the privilege of hitting the trails with none other than Rick, our very own “Trail Boss.” Rick has been riding from our hotel for over 35 years—long before I ever got on a sled myself. In fact, he used to watch me hop on the school bus in the mornings before heading out on his own ride.
Today, we made our way to Victoria Falls, taking in the breathtaking beauty of the trails, the snow-covered trees, and the crisp winter air. There’s no better way to experience the backcountry than with someone who knows these trails like the back of his hand.
Riding with an OG like Rick reminds me why we love this sport—it’s about the adventure, the people, and the places that keep calling us back year after year.
