IRONWOOD / WESTERN U.P. UPDATE – 01/04
Can’t groom so we went out to put up New Trail Head Signs.
Trail 160 near Lake Superior, no snow.
Trail Head Sign near downtown Ironwood on trail 2, about 4" of fluffy snow.
Trail Head Sign on trail 11 near the Wis border on 519 in the Chaney Lake Area about 6 inches of fluffy snow. Still need more snow.

IRONWOOD - WESTERN U.P. UPDATE via Gogebic Range Trail Authority - ORV & Snowmobile Club >> Due to the heavy rain last night and the warm conditions today The GRTA recommends not riding on the trail system until we get more snow. #westernup
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Our Saturday starts off gloomy with lingering rain and areas of fog. The rain may mix with a little snow over the higher terrain of the west today. Look for the rain to end from south to north late afternoon and evening, then expect dry, but mostly cloudy weather for the rest of the weekend and into Monday. Temperatures stay mild, peaking in the mid/upper 30s during the day and falling back to only as low as the mid/upper 20s at night. LAKE GOGEBIC AREA UPDATE via Bergland Outfitters Bait Shop & Motel >> The picture was taken yesterday afternoon before all the rain it's currently still raining. The trails in our area will be a mess till we get more snow . A couple of inches are in the forecast mid week nothing enough to really do much good .
Ice reports pretty much all standing water on the ice with bergland bay around 10-11 inches with the main part of the lake ranges from 3-8 inches as of yesterday very few have attempted fishing the main part of the lake .
Folks my reports come from snowmobile guests staying in the motel and ice reports come from actual people out fishing the lake and from the trusted guides . What you get from me rather bad or good are actual true conditions yes some people don't like to hear the reports I give but the last thing I want are folks coming to the area with false hopes on the conditions and leaving the area with regrets and feeling like they got conned . We all need your business to help survive but I won't give you false hope either.

SIDNAW - BRUCE CROSSING UPDATE via Sno Valley Riders Snowmobile Club >> Well, we didn't get quite as warm as the forecast yesterday but 38 and .34" of rain overnight has put a hurt on the snow.
It will be very icy as soon as it cools down and there will not be much snow left.
We will start rebuilding our trails as soon as we get enough snow.

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> Ope, we're suggesting you'se guys better not be adventuring out on the sled trails rights now. We've had light rain, 34*F temps, 39* high today, more light rain/drizzle through midday. Trails along road ditches will be very hazardous with ponding from the rain/melting. We did seem to get spared somewhat with the heaviest rain!! At the end of this post are google map locations of GIANT waterfalls to come visit in lieu of riding!
ARE TRAILS RUINED? NO! Trails along roadway ditches and in the swamps will need major attention once the flowing water subsides. Trails in the woods on good surfaces will rebound quickly with some fresh snow, much of our Porcupine Mountain trails remain WHITE! Early January riding is totally in the realm of reality as long as we get a good blast of snow.
Looking for other things to do today or tomorrow? How about a car ride Waterfall Tour!

POSSIBLE LAKE EFFECT SNOW EVENT AFTER NEW YEAR'S DAY UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> The pattern will become favorable for a significant lake effect event after New Year's Day with increasing confidence in the first lake effect event to take place next Thursday-Sunday. It is way too far out to talk about totals, especially as deterministic guidance often underestimates these events. I wouldn't be surprised if there is over a foot in some locations just in that period. There'll be more updates on snowfall totals late this weekend.
For that reason, Kryptonite Weather and I are going to the UP of Michigan to chase the lake effect later next week. Some drizzle will develop this afternoon and evening across central and eastern Upper MI. Ground temperatures will still be subfreezing in some areas, so icy spots may develop on untreated roads, sidewalks and parking lots across portions of interior central Upper MI this afternoon and tonight.
