Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 01/02
We received 4″ of new snow with our last winter snow advisory. Condition are improving with all our new snow in the last week. Our cold temps over night will help our wet spots firm up, that is the good news. The bad news our temps are on the rise for this weekend again. They are calling for temps on Friday and Saturday a high of 38 and 40 but our lows should keep the trails in good shape. Just ride early in the day.
The Gogebic Trail Authority is reporting Trail 2 has been groomed on 12/30 over night. Conditions are good, to very good. Use caution on corners, expect icy conditions. Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield is extremely icy; the hill climbs to Indianhead from Blackjack Big Snow Resort on the west side and east side climb up from Wakefield are icy. There is logging 3 miles east of Wakefield use caution. Logging trucks have the right away so please give them the right of way.
Trail 8 from Bingos to Tula Crossing is good to very good. There is a large water hole on the Gogebic Area Grooming section of trail 8 resulting in local detours. Alternate routes to Bergland are Trail 2 to Marenisco and trail 13 or 1 to Lake Gogebic.
Trail 160 is fair to very good. Trail has several wet spots but all are navigable you will also encounter some rocky areas. With more snow this will improve. This trail has several scenic vistas on the trail. Please stay on trail in farmers fields.
Trail 11S is closed as of 12/30 due to a 100 yard long section of marsh that broke open leaving 12-16″ of standing water.
Trail 11 N is closed indefinitely.
The Gogebic Area Groomers – Still no new report from Gogebic Area Groomers the last report was on 12/26.
The Gogebic Area Groomers have a couple of closures/reroutes. Trail 1 north of the West Shore Resort is being logged this year. A reroute is being worked from Trail 1 to Trail 8 east. Trail 100 to connect to Trail 13 is also being logged this year so a possible reroute is being planned.
We will keep you posted on the reroutes. In the meantime we need to wait for snow. Hang in there.
The Watersmeet Thunder Riders reports groomers have gone out but will be running on limited schedule as the snow builds. Trails are in good shape with very few thin areas. There are some water spots so use caution.
Trail 2 west of Watersmeet is in good condition, wet area 17 miles west.
Trail 2 east of Watersmeet was groomed Jan. 1
Trail 13 south of Cisco Chain is in good condition
Trail 13 south to Land O’Lakes was groomed Jan. 1
Trial 3 north to Bruce Crossing was also groomed on Jan. 1.
PLEASE STAY ON MARKED TRAILS. RUNNING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN RESULT IN LOSING EASMENT OF THE TRAILS AND ALSO A POSSIBLE TICKET FOR YOU.
