Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 12/20

Date of Report: December 20, 2017
Area Report:

Our temps for this coming weekend will be in the single digits to below zero. Hopefully this will help with our water problem and firm up some of the water. Overall conditions are poor to fair. With warmer temps this past weekend our trails went from a 5-7 " base to 2-4" base. Snow is thin and expect some dirt sports. Water holes were busted open so they tried to make snow bridges so please use caution. It is still considered early season riding.

The Gogebic Range Trail Authority reports:

12/20/2017
Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay: is fair with some thin spots.

Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield: is poor with extremely thin snow and wet.

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco: is fair to poor. The pipeline from the Trail 2 & 8 intersection has many mud holes so please use extreme caution and slow speed.

Trail 8 from Bingo’s to Tula Crossing it is fair to poor. There are several wet areas on the trail so please use caution. The trail is thin and you will encounter some dirt spots. CAUTION!!!!!! Trail 8 from where our groomer turns around at Underwood Tower Rd. and east is currently not groomed. The trail is a marsh and water is deep, several sleds were stuck in it. I believe the Gogebic Area Groomers have this portion closed. Travel at your own risk, Police are giving citations out for riding on the shoulder of the state hwy, M-28. The safest route to Bergland is via Trail 2/1.

Trail 160 and 11S are closed.

Lake Gogebic Area Groomer Report

With the snow we had gotten in October, followed by a warmup and then another dumping of 2 feet of snow our ground has not had a chance to freeze, which means we are dealing with alot of water.

Late fall logging operations took a toll on our trail system and there are two areas around Lake Gogebic that need re-routes. The first is on the Northwest corner of Lake Gogebic near M-28 & M-64, the second is on 13 South near the Root Cellar. The Gogebic Area Grooming is in the process of obtaining the necessary easements from private landowners, to work on re-routes.

Grooming started last weekend with trail 8 east to Ewen and 1 north to White Pine. Trails need additional time to freeze. Please use extreme caution and take it easy on these "early season" trails.

U.P. Thunder Riders of Watersmeet Groomers Report:

Groomers went out and panned the whole system, so we have a start on a base. We will be waiting for more snow before we run again.

Please use caution when riding you may come across wet areas where the groomers have broken through the ice. It is still early season riding.

THINK SNOW!

Please stay on trails, riding on unmarked trails can result is the clubls losing easement for the trail. So Please stay on trails.

PLEASE STAY ON MARKED TRAILS RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN RESULT IN THE CLUB LOSING EASEMENT OF THAT TRAIL AND YOU POSSIBLE GETTING A TICKET…..

It looks like the trails are pretty well shot… temps today will be in the 50’s with rain. Highs again tomorrow will be in the 40’s and back to the 20’s which doesn’t do a thing for us. Trails are overall poor. Lots of water and bare spots. If anything happens where we get dumped on and there is a 360 degree turn around we will let you know.

It is still possible to ride on county forest roads and in the woods where the there isn’t much sun but it will be here and there.

Sorry, I don’t have a better report but it is what it is.

Here are the last reports I received from the clubs.

Groomer Report
March 2nd, 2017

Well, we have been receiving snow over the last few days, about a 3-inches each day, which should help cushion the trails. Right now we’ve been getting snow squalls off of Lake Superior off and on all day – sunny one minute, white out the next. Groomers will not be going out as we have to deal with some pretty serious wet areas on most of our trails. I know I’ve been hearing that everyone else is grooming all around us, but the thing to remember is that 99% of our trails run through wooded or swampy areas that will have wet areas, where as most of the trails in surrounding areas run on railroad grades and are easy grooming.. For the most part our trails cannot be groomed right now without serious damage to some very expensive groomers. The grooming entity to our west learned that lesson the hard way a few years ago when they had to have a groomer pulled out of a large wet area and it basically was torn apart by the time they got it out. Unfortunately, he one railroad grade trail we do have (8 east) is so exposed that the high winds have blown most of the snow off, making grooming a non issue.

Some riders who stopped in earlier today said they did make it across trail 8 west, although it did have some bad spots. This, however, was early in the day after a near zero night temp. Once we hit the weekend warm up look for this trail to become impassable again. The best option is still our northern most trails, 102, 1 north and 13 north, but keep speeds to a minimum as they will become pretty rough. You can still ride unplowed Forest Service roads – for more info on that you can stop at one of their offices in Watersmeet, Ironwood or Ontonagon.

I do believe this will probably be the last weekend for snowmobiling as highs in the 50’s are predicted for Sunday & Monday. I will keep you posted if we have any big weather changes later in the month. Ride safe!

As previously posted, please stay on the trails in Bergland. You are not allowed to ride the hwy. through town and may be ticketed.

Groomer Report

Report for Today; 18 degrees conditions are fair to poor but rideable. There are wet spots, thin to bare spots and good spots. Groomers will run March 2 & 3 to make the best of what we have. This may be it for the season. We have a warm up into the 50’s for Sunday and it looks like we will be warm next week too. The trails are rideable, but it’s back to the good, bad and ugly so make the best of it, it could be the last.
