KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via The U.P. Superior Snowmobile Club – 2/22
Groomer Todd reporting!
Good Morning Everyone. I groomed trail 13 East from Greenland towards Twin Lakes late last night and into the early morning hours. The 8 inches of snow we received yesterday morning improved this trail dramatically. Unfortunately I had to bypass a short section of it because the hills are still to icy for the groomer to climb.
This section is about 4 miles in length and runs along the Sleepy River in what’s known as the Hunt Camp land. That section will be bumpy and icy so please ride with caution in that area. Hopefully after this next storm we will have enough snow to climb those hills again.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. The rest of the trail groomed up very well and I would rate it in great condition. I did not have any sled traffic while I was out so it had all night and morning to set up. This run is 38 miles in length and takes me 5 to 6 hours depending on conditions.
I used 36 gallons of diesel and 8 quarts of DEF to groom it last night.
Enjoy the trail should you decide to ride it today. Thank you all for supporting the Superior Snowmobile Club. We appreciate your support and positive comments.
Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone!

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 2/22
This quote from Nick Berendt is beautiful and so true in regards to what keeps them coming back multiple times a year over decades! “Really I do love all the snow and the trails BUT it’s REALLY about the people in the Yoop! Just good good people. “ said, Nick.
🎉Happy 22nd Anniversary!🎉
Nick and Lanna Berendt (frequent riders of the Keweenaw) were married 22 years ago in the Keweenaw and just spent the last few days celebrating their anniversary here! Their friends Terry & Becky Stefanik joined them on this trip to help celebrate!
Nick shared this recap of their trip, “Let’s
just talk about this amazing weekend…Heading north Friday we really weren’t sure what to expect. After rain earlier in the week and trail conditions from Western UP Trail Reports not being the most favorable, we knew rescheduling this trip was not an option as this trip was to celebrate our anniversary.
Some of you know that Lanna Berendt and I got married up north in Lake Linden and this place has become our family’s getaway from reality. Joining us this year again was our friends Terry Stefanik and Becky Stefanik and as much as we started off the weekend a bit nervous I can tell you that the Yoop did not disappoint. Over the last 15 years we’ve become friends with many of the locals and built some really cool friendships. With some of the old friendships and some of the new ones we found every flat trail and every hidden gem. I’m sure I checked Keweenaw Trail Reports about every hour and planned my trail trips accordingly!
Day 2 we headed south on 17 to 3 from Calumet to Mass city stoped for a quick lunch at Parkview – New Lodge and Grill We had a short day but had over 100 miles on before noon.
Day 3 was perfect. After checking Groomer Tracker we could see that heading north for the day was going to be the best option. We ran up to Cliff View Bar and Hanna recommended we head up to Eagle Harbor Inn and WOW was that a great experience, Adam (the bartender) was amazing !! Really I do love all the snow and the trails but it’s REALLY about the people in the Yoop! Just good good people. After lunch we headed down to Frosty’s and if you know, you know…..😉 Trails 130, 134, 132 all just flat and fast! Over 400 miles later and a 8 hr drive home this was our favorite trip north in a very long time !!! Thanks to all the locals that helped us slicks enjoy what I think is the greatest place for winter fun – Keweenaw Peninsula!
Thank you S❄ much for sharing, Nick! Happy Anniversary!

Are trail gates closed on Trail 5 from Champion up to Big Bay and other trails around there or can we still sneak out? With this much snow, we can probably can’t see the gates! Lol.

Widespread 8-12 inches are forecast; higher amounts in excess of 2 feet are forecast across the higher terrain of Marquette and Baraga Counties into Thursday morning. KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports >> What is YOUR average miles riding, each season and how many will you end up with this season? Less than 15 hours ago Ryan Bennet decided there wasn’t chance he was missing out on a little end of the season throttle therapy. Ryan arrived at Krupps Resortearly this morning after the long drive from Crntral Illinois, slept for a little bit and then hit the trail early. Ryan is a long time rider of the Keweenaw and usually shares full reviews of his rides so others can see current conditions. In typical winters Ryan will log a LARGE amount of miles for a season along with high mileage days. In the 2021/22 season Ryan put on over 5200 miles and a 377 mile single day is not completely unusual for him! This trip will definitely create a bit of a challenge for him in regards to be able to ride a usual and typical amount of miles as the Portage Lake Lift Bridge was closed prior to the season ending. This means Ryan was not able to head north into the Keweenaw this morning. Trail conditions took a pretty big hit further south yesterday, with the warm temps and sun, this will limit his mileage, along with the fact that trail 13 is closed. Early this morning Ryan headed from Krupp’s to Houghton and shared a photo of the bridge and canal. Ryan said, “Made it from Krupps to Houghton and back, Trail 3 is fair to good, excellent late season conditions for not grooming!” Thanks for sharing Ryan, we look forward to hearing how the rest of your day goes! Enjoy! #keweenaw#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Temperatures turn warmer today compared to the last couple of days with highs generally ranging in the 40s under sunny skies. Temperatures should stay in the 30s closer to the Superior shoreline. There is a chance for some pockets of freezing rain along the WI/MI border. Snow comes to an end Saturday evening, but clouds hang on for Sunday. Expect total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches. Use caution if driving, slippery roads possible late tonight through Saturday morning. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaTemperatures turn warmer today compared to the last couple of days with highs generally ranging in the 40s under sunny skies. KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports >> Chasing snow has definitely been the norm this season and you had to be ready to leave with a moments notice. We can all hope next year will be nothing like this year! ‘Snownlyfans’ decided yesterday to chase some snow himself, from Sebewaing to Mass City - an 8 hour drive! After arriving last night at Adventure Motel, Snownlyfans got started early this morning and rode from Mass City to Houghton, Houghton to Sidnaw and back to Mass City! He already has 195 miles on today. Snownlyfans shared some photos and comments on riding. He said, “Can’t tell you his much snow I was pushing with my bumper from Mass City to Krupp's Mini Mart, but it’s DEEP! Continued up to the South Range Pub, but it was closed 😩 Rode up to Houghton and then back south. Tried to ride into Sidnaw but unfortunately some of the trail was plowed. Oh well…..195 mile day!” Thanks for sharing Snownlyfans! Glad you were able to get some throttle therapy in!
