KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 01/21 Where did you chase the snow to this weekend? We had a lot of riders that chased the 50 plus inches of snow that fell here in the Keweenaw lady week! <> <> KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Snowmobile Club – 01/21 Trails took a beating yesterday as the main corridors on our system saw very high traffic. As a reminder, we lack a robust “base” for this time of year. We cut and laid things back down but without that base it tears apart quickly. Reminder that the High Rock Spur is not being groomed due to the trail condition and that there are still many wet areas on our system. Snow totals ranged from little to nothing along the Superior shoreline due to the warm lake temperatures, to 2 feet plus in the higher terrain of Marquette and Baraga Counties. Strong northerly winds are expected and blowing snow is likely. Widespread 8-12 inches are forecast; higher amounts in excess of 2 feet are forecast across the higher terrain of Marquette and Baraga Counties into Thursday morning. Note: A sharp gradient in snow totals is expected just inland from the Great Lake-especially along the Lake Superior shoreline in Baraga and Marquette Counties. Wet snow combined with strong northerly winds may cause sporadic power outages. Mark Berg and crew were just one of the groups that chose to ride the Keweenaw! It’s crazy to think that it’s the middle of January and riders are making their first trip of the season. Also crazy to believe it’s the middle of January, and we just recently received the first real significant snowfall.
Mark shared these beautiful photos and said, “We rode Trail 3 from Houghton to Copper Harbor. Plenty of snow. Was a little choppy at first. Meet the groomer half way up and it was like glass after that. On the way home it got a little choppy, even after being gromed. But from a group of Southern Minnesota riders, it sure beats a corn field! Thank you so much for all the trail updates. Keep up the great work!”
Thanks for sharing, Mark! We experienced the same thing on Trail 3 last night, which can be expected without really having a base yet and heavy traffic. Next weeks bit warmer temps should help with that and hopefully some fresh snowfall on top!
Riders should ride with extreme caution as it is still considered, early season conditions. You may experience exposed rocks, thin spots and some trails have less snow over than others. Please also note, the spur trail to High Rock Bay has not been groomed this season and there is a significant water hole. Please see post made yesterday with photos.
For those looking to stage in Houghton, please note the previous lot used for parking below the bridge, is no longer available for truck and trailer parking. Ray Kestner Waterfront Park right down the road is open and there is plenty of room!

Less than 15 hours ago Ryan Bennet decided there wasn’t chance he was missing out on a little end of the season throttle therapy. Ryan arrived at Krupps Resortearly this morning after the long drive from Crntral Illinois, slept for a little bit and then hit the trail early.
Ryan is a long time rider of the Keweenaw and usually shares full reviews of his rides so others can see current conditions. In typical winters Ryan will log a LARGE amount of miles for a season along with high mileage days. In the 2021/22 season Ryan put on over 5200 miles and a 377 mile single day is not completely unusual for him!
This trip will definitely create a bit of a challenge for him in regards to be able to ride a usual and typical amount of miles as the Portage Lake Lift Bridge was closed prior to the season ending. This means Ryan was not able to head north into the Keweenaw this morning. Trail conditions took a pretty big hit further south yesterday, with the warm temps and sun, this will limit his mileage, along with the fact that trail 13 is closed.
Early this morning Ryan headed from Krupp’s to Houghton and shared a photo of the bridge and canal. Ryan said, “Made it from Krupps to Houghton and back, Trail 3 is fair to good, excellent late season conditions for not grooming!”
