Gaylord Area Trail Report – 02/16
Gaylord Bureau – February 16, 2024 – 9:08 a.m. Attention Northern Michigan Snowmobilers! We’ve received approximately 6 inches of fresh snow overnight, with forecasts predicting continued lake-effect snow throughout the weekend. While the current trail conditions are suitable for riding, grooming operations are currently on hold. Please use caution while enjoying the trails this weekend, as they have not been groomed as of Friday morning. We will keep you posted with any additional changes to the weather. Please check back for updates and trails conditions. Please remember that groomers have the right of way and kindly move off the trail so they can safely proceed. If you approach a groomer from behind, the operator will signal when it’s safe for you to pass. Groomers are here to make your ride more enjoyable so please be courteous! From my cameras I could still see the one set of car tracks thru my drive at Sledheads. So I am still sticking with my thoughts from yesterday that it would only be kind of good for the first couple sleds thru. I see all kinds of posts on people that want to or are coming up to ride saying its only carbides and slides, all I know is I wouldnt take my sled out with what we have. I dont like it anymore than everyone else but thats just the way it is. On a brighter note I met Trevor Gruhn yesterday who is a regular reader from down by Kzoo. I fixed him up with a new Sledheads T and sweatshirt. He like everyone else wishes there was more snow too. We need a really heavy duty system snow to hit us. I talked to David over at the swamp last night and he said he only had 2 sleds in all day yesterday and that was about 9 last night. Thanks for checking in and if you do ride please ride safely. Highest accumulations tonight will be along the straits while the typical northwesterly snow belts of northern lower can expect around a foot this Wednesday into Thursday morning. Strong gusty winds will produce areas of rapidly dropping visibilities, which could result periods of whiteouts on roadways (especially Wednesday evening through Thursday morning). It'll be very windy as well, especially later Wednesday into Thursday. We could have gusts over 40mph over land and 50mph over the lakes and lakeshore areas. This is will cause extremely difficult travel yet again.
We'll have light snow Wednesday morning for the commute with heavy snow in the existing lake effect heavy prone areas. The Wednesday evening commute looks like garbage since we'll have strong winds and heavy snow coming down for ALL areas of Michigan. Beyond that I do see warm-up. However, we'll be on the storm track so we could get some shots of rain turning to snow. It looks active!
I do apologize, I ran out of time for drawing my own snow maps tonight. However, the HRRR has done wonderfully with the lake effect so far. I will gladly endorse what it suggests for potential snow tonight and tomorrow.
I'll be issuing my own map tomorrow for Wednesday night / Thursday's clipper system and lake effect, though!
