SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/03
12/3 update- 🚨🚨Please, PLEASE take this warning seriously! 🚨🚨 The city trails as well as 49 all the way down to Kinross are full of water and slush. They ARE NOT rideable. Do not even attempt it!
The good news is that Steve and Chris made it in just the Tucker (no drag) from the Soo all the way to Kinross on trail 49 to assess and clear trees and other hazards. This means they made it over the redecked bridge at the Beaver Pond! Yay! They widened it as much as possible so the edges are set and now it has a chance to freeze. There are land owners in there that do not want sleds attempting it yet. This is for your safety! Please do not attempt it! You will not make it on a sled and tow companies will not be able to get you you. It’s a looooong cold, wet walk to get help. We will update when we get in there again. More cold and snow is on the way, but we really just need cold now.

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/3 evening update. Brimley Bill was out again today doing what he can to pack trails in the Bay Mills area. We are getting a lot of questions on conditions, and the best I can tell ya is to watch this page. Any of our trails to our south in the swampy areas and the city should be considered unrideable and unsafe. Wet as heck and honestly dangerous, in my opinion. Avoid them! I have not heard how it is around the airport in Kinross, so I’d love a report if any locals have been out there. 472 out of Kinross west to 480 into the Spile Dam will also be very wet. Basically, trail 8 from the Soo to Raco and 889 are the only really rideable trails. The forest service roads in Raco/Strongs/Bay Mills have good snow if you want to play off trail. More snow on the way tonight into Thursday. The bad trails mentioned simply need more time and more cold. Nothing more we can do in there yet, that we haven’t already done. So for the positive, here’s Bill’s report- “I ran the Mission Hill route again today. I have not groomed the courtesy trail to the Bay Mills Casino yet. Until the ground freezes up better there is too much risk of getting stuck. There are still water holes on trail 889 between Tower Road and Plantation Road. The smaller ones are starting to fill in, but there are still a few larger ones that need more cold temps to freeze. All in all the Mission Hill and Raco areas are looking pretty good for December 3rd.” If you are riding to and from Bay Mills Resort & Casino, please stay on the shoulder of the road to and from 889, the trail may not be safe yet. It’s a pretty short stretch, so shouldn’t be too rough on your equipment. Enjoy the pics and video! Thank you Bill and all of our volunteers!!!❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
WEATHER UPDATE via 9&10 News >> Clipper and lake effect snow on the way tonight through Thursday morning. WEATHER UPDATE via Meteorologist Brad Sugden >> Lake effect + clipper system + lake effect = a hard forecast! But, here we go! It'll be very windy as well, especially later Wednesday into Thursday. We could have gusts over 40mph over land and 50mph over the lakes and lakeshore areas. This is will cause extremely difficult travel yet again. We'll have light snow Wednesday morning for the commute with heavy snow in the existing lake effect heavy prone areas. The Wednesday evening commute looks like garbage since we'll have strong winds and heavy snow coming down for ALL areas of Michigan. Then, we'll switch back over to lake effect areas by Thursday am. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea#gaylord#cadillac#traversecity#petoskeyLake effect + clipper system + lake effect = a hard forecast! SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/2- Heads up! Especially for locals- the city trails, specifically from Ashmun to the high school and Kewadin and VERY wet, and also have utility work ongoing. We are recommending that you avoid this area until further notice for your own safety. We have a nice stretch of cold nights ahead, so that should help. We’ll update when we can! Also, if you subscribe to Groomer Tracker, you may see a tucker move down 49 to kinross in the coming days. It WILL NOT have a drag with it, just moving the unit to check conditions. We also have property owners that have asked for us to hold off on opening the sections between 8 and 9 mile until things firm up. Please respect this. For now, the only sections of trail on our trail system that have been panned are trail 8 from the Soo to Ranger Rd, and 889 around Bay Mills. There are still wet areas on the Mission Hill Loop on 889. Early season conditions, ride safe and with someone, and let people know where you’re going and when to expect you back. Lots of season to go and we want you to enjoy it when it’s prime. As always, we’ll keep you posted! 2-4” more on the way❄️❄️❄️❄️ #soo ... See MoreSee Less
WEATHER UPDATE via Meteorologist Brad Sugden >> MORE THAN A FOOT MORE snow coming to localized areas tonight through Tuesday! Then, a clipper system with MORE lake effect Thursday. Beyond that I do see warm-up. However, we'll be on the storm track so we could get some shots of rain turning to snow. It looks active! I do apologize, I ran out of time for drawing my own snow maps tonight. However, the HRRR has done wonderfully with the lake effect so far. I will gladly endorse what it suggests for potential snow tonight and tomorrow. I'll be issuing my own map tomorrow for Wednesday night / Thursday's clipper system and lake effect, though! We ain't done yet, y'all! #miweather #keweenaw#westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea#gaylord... See MoreSee Less
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Lake effect snow will switch to the north wind snow belts. Snow bands could become heavy at times during this morning's commute. So, exercise caution if traveling. Take it slow on ice and snow! As lake effect snow persists through the day, snow accumulations near 2-4" are possible, less near the lakeshores, and locally higher 4-8" are possible in western Alger and northern Delta counties. Lake effect snow finally begins to taper off Tuesday before a clipper system brings widespread light snow late into Wednesday.
