FREDERIC / GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic – 12/09 2 feet in 2 days, that’s about how much snow we have lost. Trails are a mud bog this morning. Its incredible how great things were and now how bad they are. So the roller coaster of weather begins. There were a few sleds out and about on sunday and there was a father son team that rode in from Mancelona. Pics below are the trail crossings just north of the high school and of a truck from Tennessee with a good license plate on it. So the wait is on for rideable snow now. Weather forecast for the week doesnt seem to promising. Thanks for checking in. It is way too far out to talk about totals, especially as deterministic guidance often underestimates these events. I wouldn't be surprised if there is over a foot in some locations just in that period. There'll be more updates on snowfall totals late this weekend. Sled traffic was more than I expected to see on thursday but yesterday compared to today was fantastic. A few times I saw at least 15 sleds over at the swamp and a few sleds rode into Sledheads. This morning a different storty. Icy, Slushy and dirt coming thru. Below are a few pics from yesterday where it looked decent and the ugly pics are from this morning. It rained and melted most all night at my house and all my snow melted off my porch during the night. Not looking good for tommorow either.with rain and 40s predicted.thru sunday. Pics below I took at several trail crossings this morning. Still alot of snow in the woods and I have seen worse looking trails but with the forcasts for the next few days what little we have is going to deteriorate so I say use it while it is here. ONce the rain starts it will ruin things. Boy I do not like saying things like this but what can you do. Snow chants may help turn the rain to snow. Thanks for checking in. A few sleds out and about but its going downhill from here. I ended up riding yesterday to Grayling and then one lap around Lake Margrethe for a total of a 40 mile ride. Light snow will begin to blossom into more widespread snow late tonight, resulting in potentially unpleasant travel conditions for the Monday morning commute. Its 10:45 a.m. and we have about an inch of new snow this morning. Nothing fell overnight. There was barely any sled traffic both saturday and sunday around Frederic. They say we are going to get a few inches today but there is still forcasts of warmer temps coming. I was hoping for a 3 or 4 inch thick snow by about noon so I could go out and try to take a ride. As stated with our earlier posts, the precip types should be a snow/sleet mix as you head north of the I-96 corridor. The Saginaw Bay, Thumb and northern half of the lower peninsula should remain all snow.
The tricky part is the snow and freezing rain potential south of I-96, including the I-94 corridor. As of this post, icy roads have shut down portions of I-94 west of Jackson.
