SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/11
12/11 update-
Good morning all!
Brimley Bill was out this morning very early to make his run on 8 between Brimley and Raco, and part of 480 through the Spile Dam.
Here’s his report-
“This morning while the temperature was still low, I groomed Trail 8 from Raco to Brimley, the power-line to Ranger Road, and Trail 480 part way down Spile Dam Road.
Most of the route is looking pretty good. There is a section on Trail 8 from Brimley to about halfway to Raco where the snow on the trail is getting thin. There are ponds and swampy areas on both sides of the trail. The ground isn’t frozen yet, and the snow is just soaking into the trail.
From the photos you can see a set of tracks that left deep ruts on Trail 480. The tracks started just south of M28, and continued on Trail 480 past where I turned around on Spile Dam Road. The tracks were so deep that it took two groomer passes to fill them in. The photos were taken after the first pass. You can see how deep they are, even after the first groomer pass.”
I have a message out on the local ORV club page to remind folks that this section is sled only. Hopefully, it was just a mistake and we won’t have any further issues.
Thank you Bill for your time and the report!
Again, no big snow here last night or today. Lake effect is supposed to return tomorrow.

WEATHER UPDATE via Meteorologist Brad Sugden >> Snow map is holding strong based on latest guidance! I see the small NW shift on the Euro. However, the HRRR and GFS have been doing well this season and are holding steady with my map below. This will start after sunset tonight and continue through very early Thursday. The 24" potential is in the high terrain west of Marquette NOT for the city itself. I think a foot is possible there, though! Marquette is in my 10-14" / 12-16" band so essent... See MoreSee Less

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 3/3/25 Good evening! I have some mixed news, as is usually the case this time of the year. I took a ride down 49 from the Soo to Kinross to see our friends at The Well Diggers Ass. Also hit 472 to 494 around the airport in Kinross. The city trails, trail 49 to 9 mile, and trail 8 were excellent with lots of base and snow coverage. 49 gets thin south of 9, with dirt patches showing in the parts where the sun hit. D... Trails 49, 449, 8 from South Street to Ashmun Bay, the high school trail, and the courtesy trails to Don Dee Lanes and also to the Holiday Inn are all in excellent shape with a crazy base.
