Gaylord Area Trail Report – 12/21
Gaylord Bureau – December 20, 2024 9:00 a.m. We had an epic start to snowmobile season – the Gaylord area got hit with over 80 inches of snow to start out winter! After a light rain and warming temperatures, trails are in poor shape and generally frozen with some stretches of dirt showing. Grooming has stopped due to the temps, but don’t worry, there’s more snow in the forecast! Check out this live feed to see trail #7, just north of Gaylord. We had a light dusting overnight but in both Grayling and Frederic I could still see my foot prints from yesterday. At least its a cold 13 degrees this morninig and the ground has hardened up. I only had 2 sleds come in here yesterday and saw one sled pulling into the swamp about 5:30 when I left. Only 2 trailers at the motels this morning in Grayling and they were both warming up their trucks and heading to the u.p. so I am not expecting to see to much traffic tommorow. Weather forcasts have change a little bit for colder temps the next couple of days so that is good but I dont like the extended for between Christmas and New years. Maybe Santa will surprise us but hey its not any different than the last few years. We have to make the best of what we have or just stay put. Temperatures also climb above freezing through the overnight, remaining there until Thursday evening. The bad news is that gusty winds return late tonight into Thursday. Snow will continue to spread across the area, leading to 1-2" of wet accumulations for many south of the bridge before switching over rain. Strong winds are expected today with gusts to 40+ mph, potentially leading to more down trees and limbs from recent icing. This could lead to dangerous conditions for those without power or a safe source of heat. Does anyone have any information that would explain why Antrim County was excluded from the the governor’s State of Emergency? – If you approach a groomer from behind, kindly wait for the operator to signal you to pass.
