Sault Ste. Marie Area Trail Report – 12/29
SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/29 12/29 afternoon update- hopefully this is the worst it’s going to get. Trail 8 at 20th St in the Soo. No bare spots, solid ice with some slush on top. Just wanted to give a visual. Still a small threat of rain tonight, then changing over to snow. We know that the swamps on 49 and on part of the city trails, especially behind Kewadin will be very, very wet. Even when snow returns, those are going to need more time and cold. Please stay off of those for your own safety! 480, 472, 889, 8, and 494 likely faired the best in this warm up. Thank you to our incredible operators for the work they put in to build such a great base. It’s paying off in the high ground areas for sure! <> 12/29-we’re almost out of it! Now, rain switches over to snow overnight tonight🤞 The Open Snow app shows up to 15” in the next 10 days. It’s been pretty darn accurate so far this season, so let’s hope it is this time too! Lake Effect snow is really difficult to predict totals, so who knows what we’ll end up with. Temps are definitely encouraging, and we know Lake Superior is wide open and warm. Just need the NW winds to cooperate. As always, I’ll keep you posted! <> <> Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association Facebook Page <> Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report Tuesday December 31st, 2024 - 4:02 pm WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> Northwest flow lake effect snow showers will begin to pick up in intensity starting as early as Wednesday morning, and particularly into Wednesday night across the eastern UP. Parts of Chippewa county could pick up 3-5 inches of snow or locally a little more by the Thursday morning commute. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/31- finally seeing cooler temps and light snow this morning, even though none was forecasted for today. News stations are starting to report that we should see measurable snow by Thursday in the 6-8” range. All indications are that that our base survived, but obviously we have not been on every single part of each trail. We know that 49 south of the Soo and the city trails from Kewadin to Ashmun will be very wet and we are continuing to advise that you stay out of both areas, even after the snow comes, until we can assess those areas. We can’t roll groomers until there is measurable fresh snow to groom, and even then we’ll likely let sleds pack it down first to preserve it. I can tell you that they were flat as heck before the warm up, so my hope is that they still are. I read 8” left here on my snow gauge in the Soo. The woods have more. When I looked at trail 8 yesterday, I’d say there’s easily a 4-5” ice base. We’ll keep you posted! Where can I buy that snow meter? A rather significant lake effect event is expected for the second half of this week for areas along Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Currently, the highest totals are expected in the eastern half of the UP but heavy snowfall is expected along Lake Michigan and the western third of the UP.. As usual, snowfall rates will sometimes near or exceed 1" an hour, making travel very difficult. Snowfall totals could be near 2' in some areas, but the exact location is still uncertain.
I'm talking to Micheal from Kryptonite Weather later today on the plan, but we are leaving Wednesday evening to be up there by Thursday morning. From there, haven't planned yet but looking like toward Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey~OUTDATED~
