Watersmeet – Western U.P. Trail Report – 01/03
WATERSMEET / WESTERN U.P. UPDATE via U.P. Thunder Riders Snowmobile Club – 01/03 I will start by saying Happy New Year, and unfortunately that is about all I have as of now. We have only gotten about 1” of snow as of today and it’s all fluff so nothing to help us get closer to getting out to groom again. I think we still have some base in most areas so when we get some real snow we will be able to get back out there. Thanks for your patience and think snow. <> <> Reports via: U.P. UPDATE via Gogebic Range Trail Authority - ORV & Snowmobile Club >> A grooming operation is currently underway from Bessemer to Ironwood, where a snowfall of approximately four inches has been recorded. Trail 160 is accessible, but riders should exercise caution due to the presence of large rocks, and the snow cover becomes increasingly sparse as one approaches the lake. Moreover, due to the closure of the Wisconsin trail, riders must turn back. Trail 8 from Wakefield is anticipated to be groomed within the next 24 hours, while Trail 11 from Trail 8 is scheduled for grooming tomorrow or potentially tonight. An assessment of Trail 11 south is planned for tomorrow to ascertain whether the swamp has frozen sufficiently to bear the weight of the grooming machine. Additional snowfall is crucial. #ironwood #westernup ... Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report Sunday January 5th, 2025 - 3:42 am LAKE GOGEBIC AREA UPDATE via Gogebic Area Grooming >> Your Saturday evening Bergland Area Grooming report for January 4th 2025.. Holy wow!!! The amount of snowmobile traffic today!! You weekend warriors rock! We'll kinda do a good bad and ugly type post. First and foremost a Huge shout-out to Steve and The Tree Wrangler for taking care of numerous tree's in a tighter section of our system we call the corridor.(Basically a feeder trail to all of our trail head's) Thank you so much guy's! Next is the temp's. When we got in tonight it was hovering around 5°and 7°, perfect but it's really locked trails in tight. The long range looks to remain cold so that's a plus. Tonight 102 and 1n were groomed. We also had a machine run up 13n without a drag to move whatever snow around he could and knock down berms. It might not be the prettiest but we're trying to stay ahead of everything freezing in and impossible to work with. Now we'll switch to the bad. There's not much in the way of new snow in the forecast. The snow is thin and we need a good system dumper. I guess the ugly is next. We only have 1.5 trails that are groomable. 102 and 1n. And we say 1.5 because 102 from Bergland to about half way up towards South Boundary Rd. Is thin and not doing our drags any justice. That being said, as of now, most likely Grooming will stop until we receive more snow. Long winded but a lot to report. Stay positive, it's still rideable we just need more snow to groom. ❄️❄️❄️ #lakegogebic #westernup #snowphotos ... ❄️Trail 101 Groomed Last Night - Good to Excellent Condition
❄️Trail 13 Groomed Last night - Good to Very Good Condition
❄️Trail 12 from 101 to trail 1 outside of White Pine - Poor to Good - ‼️Water hazards exist, ride with caution! They are easily navigable.
❄️🛑Trail 12 from 137 to Greenland RIDING NOT ADVISED. The groomer broke open two large wet areas rendering the trail impassable. We aborted the groom and we'll assess next steps today.
❄️Trail 12 from Ontonagon to 101 has not been groomed. The Driess Creek bridge is out, traffic must detour down Norwich road.
❄️Trail 137 from Ontonagon to Trail 13 is rated poor. Half of the trail base has been lost and gravel is in it. We tried to pull snow from the sides last night. There's enough snow to get into town for sure, but it'll be a slower ride due to the gravel.
‼️Trail 12 from Ontonagon west to 101, including the detour along Norwich road all the way to 101 is being groomed in today. We're going to spend time along Norwich road to get a good surface for sleds and open up the powerline trail. We're working on this to provide additional access besides 137 into Ontonagon. Reminder, Driess Creek bridge is out!
PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR TRAIL SIDE STOPS! RIDE RIGHT! Ride slowly as trails will get icy through the day. After each groom trails continue to improve!

The reroute of Trail 12 Down Norwich Rd. really wasn’t all that bad. There’s plenty of snow on the road and in the ditches. We definitely saw it all between fresh powder to flat groomed trails to bumpy trails to trails down to gravel. There’s good riding to be found out there, but we definitely need more snow. #ontonagon #westernup #snowphotos ... See MoreSee Less
