MASS CITY – KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via The U.P. Superior Snowmobile Club >> 01/09

Groomer report: Jon from last night.

Grooming went very well on trail 12 from MassCity to the turn around at the Silver reserve. There were a few bumpy corners and the road portion is developing ice in the middle. Overall good conditions. Hopefully get a nice amount of snow soon.

Thanks, Jon!

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Hamilton's North Coast Adventures >> We're hearing there's no snow in White, Pine?! What the heck?! That's where we are! Cripes, we even groomed all the White Pine trails last night! Don't believe everything you read on the internet. Our good buddy Josh Ramsey groomed trail 13 and 101 last night for our club North Country Snowmobile Club UP and was stopped by some "Iowa Boys" who said trails are great! Water hazards exist, but we continue to improve our snow bridges as time and snow allow. The Lake of the Clouds & South Boundary road loops are PERFECT for riding. THERE IS SNOW IN SILVER CITY EVEN!
Rental sleds available all week and weekend! Come ride! Snow in the forecast! #ontonagon #westernup #snowphotos

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Meteorologist Brad Sugden >> SNOW TIME!!
The big system to the south will be giving us a little bit of snow on the north end Friday!
Expect a nice and easy 1-3" for the most part across the area. Roads will be slick at times, but salt and brine treatments should work just fine with temps in the middle 20s.
Winds could be about 10-15mph at times, which isn't too high, but still could cause some blowing around and reduced visibility. Mainly in wide open areas.
TIMING: Snow starts in Southwest Michigan, Lake Michigan shoreline of Northern Lower, and the U.P. between 7-8am. Flint and the TriCities by about 10-11am. Detroit likely after 12pm, maybe even as late as 2pm in some areas.
System snow will wrap up around midnight while lake effect kicks in on the west side of the state behind the system.
Lake effect totals Saturday are NOT included on this map. I'm keeping this for Friday only.
Lake effect Saturday will be very localized with some areas perhaps getting 3-6" more in heavy bands. #miweather #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaSNOW TIME!!

LAKE GOGEBICA AREA UPDATE via Gogebic Area Grooming >> Marenisco area crews out tonight working Trail 1S from Marenisco to Presque Isle. The base is very thin but we tried to smooth it out as best possible. The beaver dam that we recently took down drained nicely but left a good size trench so use caution if traveling on this trail. The beavers looked to be retaliating by dropping some fresh trees across the trail which we cleaned up this evening. When we get some more snow we will start working on a snow bridge for the flowing creek. We also noted that recently someone decided to use a section of the trail with an ATV while it was still soft. Cleaned up and filled the ruts as best possible but there are still some decent ruts so again, use caution. Overall the base of Trail 1S is thin and there are exposed rocks, gravel and dirt in spots but is rideable and fairly smooth. The grade (Trail 1S and 2 combined) is in good condition and should be rock hard by tomorrow morning. Enjoy what we have, there is still decent riding to be had! #lakegogebic #westernup #snowphotos ... See MoreSee Less

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports >> What is the most amount of miles you have put on a sled?!
Mike Aschliman brought the “OG Rev” up this trip and turned 10,000 smiles riding from Lake of the Clouds to Calumet!
Mike said, “There is definitely more snow south of the bridge. Well done groomers!”
Thanks for sharing Mike! We know you take real good care of that OG Rev!
Notes on Keweenaw Snowmobile Club trail system…
* Trails from Toivola to Mohawk have been groomed almost every night
* Trails 124 is closed for logging
* Trail 134 is a great option for visiting The Mariner North, Copper Harbor Fuel Stop, The Gas Lite General Store - The Genny etc in CH - Copper Harbor has received fresh snowfall also the last few days
* The Valley Sno Drifters/Dreamland Trails are not yet open to Dreamland Restaurant & Bar - but Dreamland is easily accessible by vehicle just down Bootjack Rd out of Lake Linden - Dreamland is a favorite of many!
Notes from the club per Visit Keweenaw website
* ⚠️”Trails north of Mohawk continue to require more snow before grooming can be made. Riding these trails may be considered challenging and the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club urges caution - icy conditions, rocks, thin or bare areas, water may still be present.”
* ⚠️”Keweenaw Snowmobile Club made an opening pass on Trail 133. It is extremely wet and not recommended to ride yet. More snow needed to freeze that trail in.”
* “There is not enough snow yet to groom trails 151, and 152”
* ⚠️”Trail 122 is passable, but ride with caution: expect low snow mixed with mud and early season conditions” #keweenaw #snowphotos

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> 1/8/25 TRAIL UPDATE
Josh R from da big city of TULA, MI sent in a video of him grooming a portion of 13 last night for his first solo run! Congrats, Josh!!!!
❄️FRESH SNOW! 1-3" seems to have fallen across the area. SNOW is forecast almost every single day for the next 10! Right now forecast is for minor accumulations, but it makes ALL the difference! Trails are rated fair with poor sections that have water hazards (trail 1 by Porkies, Trail 12 by Hamilton's North Coast Adventures, and trail 12 east of 137) as well as EXCELLENT sections that make you forget about those other spots! We are performing groomer training this week and curtailed our normal grooming efforts to make the snow last. Over processing the snow can cause it to turn into "sugar snow" and no longer set up the way we need it to.
TRAIL 11 SOUTH BOUNDARY ROAD and TRAIL 1 from White Pine to Lake of the Clouds is getting groomed tonight.
TRAIL 12 from White Pine to 101, Trail 13 from 101 to 137 is getting groomed tonight. #ontonagon #westernup #snowphotos

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Western UP Trail Reports >> SO LET ME BE THE BAD GUY
Since nobody else wants to say it "getting to Copper Harbor sucks". Let me clarify this for ya.
If you're planning to head north things get rough around Houghton/ Hancock , but it always does. Trail 17 is a little better than trail 3 and both are pretty much rideable to Calumet. However heading past Calumet gets real thin and a lot of bad spots. Now don't get me wrong there's some fairy good spots. Most everyone I've spoke with have turned around due to these conditions. Those that chose to go all the way wished they didn't, some have even had issues of overheating. Also getting Gay is a No Go.
So let's wait and see if they get anymore snow to help those trails get rideable again. As always Ride Right and be careful

Well at least we can report it snowed all day today and we picked up at least 3” right in town and more in the highlands.

A little concern abounds when the negatives keep finding their way to our page. The situation needs monitoring for sure, but there are many pluses and ways to navigate to the north that don’t involve what’s being posted.

Appreciate the honesty

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports >> We definitely NEED snow! Especially north of Mohawk area! ( Conditions south of South Range seem to have more snow!).
Dale Stroschein shared the good, the bad, and the ugly from his ride with his wife yesterday. After coming into town late Sunday night and staying at Krupps Resort, they headed out for Copper Harbor yesterday.
Dale shared these photos and said, “Well yesterday unfortunately we fell short of our goal making it from Krupps Resort into the very tip of the #keweenawpeninsula where we had our overnight reservation at The Mariner North. The trails overall had been in great shape, a few light snow areas closer to the heavy traffic areas around Houghton which isn’t unusual and just south of Phoenix/Eagle River which left us as I said…short of our goal on yesterdays fun adventure with my wife! Trail traffic overall yesterday was calm, we ran into a few smaller groups, but overall we had very smooth sailing like we were riding on our own private property which is why we love going during the week! From the start of our ride yesterday meeting the owner of Krupps Resort (Cassandra) each stop we made along the trail to our final stop at the Ramada Inn which overlooks the Keweenaw Water Way/Portage Channel…everyone was super friendly and very accommodating! Todays adventure is for us to head towards Bergland Michigan possibly stopping in and visiting another couple great businesses AJ's Lodge and Oven and Hoop N Holler Tavern!”
We hope you enjoy your ride today! Thanks for sharing Dale! #keweenaw #snowphotos
