SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 02/11
2/11/25 It’s Tuesday morning, which means we get a very detaileded report from Steve! Something I look forward to every week, so let’s get to it-
“Last night was another group effort cleaning up Trail 49 from the Soo to Kinross.
Groomer Nathan, Groomer Dennis, and myself shared driving duties to cover the five plus hour run. Passenger Chris rode along for the middle three and a half hours and assisted with some much needed guidance.
Overall, the trail was in really good shape when we started. The open areas had heavy drifting from all the new snow and the trail was unrecognizable. We decided to focus on taking down the high spots where needed and clean up the drifts and level the trail out in the open spots. We also utilized the limb masher all night long.
The longer days are certainly making the runs more enjoyable. A little daylight goes a long way in anticipating what is in front of you. Chris does a great job helping me plan ahead. Last night was a couple of firsts for us though.
We were on the power line just south of town when Chris says, "What the? What is on the trail up there?" I looked up from the mirrors and couldn’t believe what we were seeing. I slowed down and started to make a plan to share the trail and pass each other when the vehicle took off through a field. We managed to get a pic of it on the way by. It was the coolest thing we seen all winter.
A few miles south we had another first. We met a horse and buggy towing a guy on skis. He was carving a nice line and skillfully missing mailboxes along the side of road. It was pretty cool to see.
We did try to hop off the road along Mackinaw Trail and groom between driveways. Unfortunately, there is still open water in the ditches and we were a little nervous and decided to stay back down on the road.
The rest of the trip was mostly uneventful. Conditions were great for grooming and the trail was freezing almost as soon as we went over it. We saw the most sled traffic of the year too. Everyone was very courteous and gave us a chance to get stopped before getting around us. Thank you to the trail riders for this.
Thanks to the crew who had the equipment performing flawlessly. They have been putting in a lot of hours trying to stay ahead of repairs. I also want to thank the Monday night crew who help out to get this run done.
Hope to see more sled traffic out on the trails. Steve Lawson”
Thank you Steve, Nathan, Dennis, and Chris! More snow is on the way… again! Could this be the best winter ever here in the Soo? Certainly shaping up that way! ❄️❄️❄️

WEATHER UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> ~Snowfall Forecast Tuesday Night-Thursday Morning~ I ran out of time this morning so I had to take a picture off my phone this time. Hopefully it's visible enough. A winter storm is expected to bring a swath of heavy snowfall accumulations from KS/NE to portions of MI. A surface low will deepen in the panhandle and move northeast through the day on Wednesday. A large area of 6-9" is expected, which will cause significant travel impacts on Wednesday and Thursday. Snow will overspread southwest to northeast Tuesday night west of the Missouri River and Wednesday morning east of the Missouri River. Snow will fall for as long as 18 hours in some areas. A large area of increased lift and frontogensis with a deformation band will enhance snowfall rates to 1" an hour. Very fluffy snow will allow blowing. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea#gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskey~OUTDATED~

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> While most of the UP will be dry today through midweek, lake effect snow showers continue across the NW wind snow belts through Tuesday. Some heavier snowfall rates across the Keweenaw today may lead to a few more inches of snowfall as well as hazardous travel conditions, so the Winter Weather Advisory continues for northern Houghton and Keweenaw Counties. Otherwise, expect much colder temperatures to work in, with sub-zero overnight lows for many spots throughout the work week. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaWhile most of the UP will be dry today through midweek, lake effect snow showers continue across the NW wind snow belts through Tuesday.
