Grand Marais Area Trail Report – 02/11

GRAND MARAIS AREA UPDATE via Grand Marais Sno-Trails Assoc. >> 02/11

UP200 Weekend in Grand Marais!
Saturday will be busy as we welcome the mushers back after three years. The teams will be on the trail Friday night through Sunday morning. We are asking our snowmobiling friends to please stay on the NUMBERED trails and don’t go down unmarked side trails on Saturday. The mushers will leave Wetmore early Saturday morning and will return on Saturday night. The snowmobile sweep team will follow the last musher and remove the trail markers as they go. Your help on Saturday will keep the mushers and dogs safe. Thank you!

PARADISE AREA UPDATE via Paradise Area Night Riders www.paradiseareanightriders.org >> 2/11/25
I crawled outa bed this morning at 0630 and flipped on my outside deck lights and said "holy wah" its gonna be a busy day! It was 5 degrees and I had a solid 7" of fresh snow on my deck!!! It is now 0830 with a bright sunny sky and 7 degrees.
I am not on the schedule to groom today but I wish I was, its gonna be a blast for the guys that are on!! I`ll spend the day digging out...not so much fun.
All trails will be run today but I don`t even have to wait to hear from the guys cause I know all trails will be EXCELLENT and I don`t use that word very often! Thats all I have to say about the trails so here are a few tips for you when you come upon a groomer on the trails. I mention these cause it sure helps us on a long day on the trails and its safer for everyone. Plus. it seems to be a problem every year.
Tip #1.....When you see a groomer coming at you start looking for a good spot to get off the trail and get outa our way so we don`t have to stop or try and squeeze by....this happens WAY to often and it makes for a much longer day for us. Remember we CAN NOT get off the trail and we DO have the right of way.
Tip #2.....When you approach a groomer from behind, follow us SLOWLY from 50' back. Please stay off the brap lever so you don`t tear up the fresh groom. We will let you by as soon as possible. DO NOT just try and fly by us!!!!!
Tip #3......We would rather see hand signals for how many ppl. are behind you in your group or for the last person rather than a thumbs up or even a wave.
This concludes the days lesson on "How to get around a groomer on the trail". Please try and follow these tips. Its MUCH safer for everyone involved. THANK YOU!!!!!! HAVE A SAFE RIDE!!!!!
LET `ER SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEWBERRY AREA UPDATE via TASA Tahquamenon Area Snowmobile Association >> Some miles out of Newberry Holland Lake Park and Ride bound, not bad at all so far!
Mostly flat as a pancake..
8:45 pretty lonely in Windy Corners tonight.
80-20 my favor in the git outta my way dept. So far, 😊
72 sleds in two hours ...
11:05. Have been spending some time cutting the sticks out if the banks in some of our corners, hard to stay to the right in and out of some of them, started snowing pretty good so I'm stayin in for awhile
You may have noticed our President Chad spent a day out her leveling and pushing corners back, helped immensely.
Be careful on this bridge, they look like guardrails, but they are not, we are above them now.
1:01 Pine Stump, just got and checked the road, 4" of fresh has fallen since I turned north from Windy Corner!
Cleaned my knives off, tally ho! #newberry #snowphotos

However, with some heavier snowfall possible tonight across the far eastern UP, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Luce and Chippewa counties. WEATHER UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> ~Snowfall Forecast Tuesday Night-Thursday Morning~
I ran out of time this morning so I had to take a picture off my phone this time. Hopefully it's visible enough.
A winter storm is expected to bring a swath of heavy snowfall accumulations from KS/NE to portions of MI. A surface low will deepen in the panhandle and move northeast through the day on Wednesday. A large area of 6-9" is expected, which will cause significant travel impacts on Wednesday and Thursday. Snow will overspread southwest to northeast Tuesday night west of the Missouri River and Wednesday morning east of the Missouri River. Snow will fall for as long as 18 hours in some areas.
A large area of increased lift and frontogensis with a deformation band will enhance snowfall rates to 1" an hour. Very fluffy snow will allow blowing. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey~OUTDATED~

Just checked the forecast for West Branch MI for Wed and it says 6-9 inches. We just got 10 inches so this will be awesome!

6-9”? Hell ya!, I’ll get the yardstick ready!

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> While most of the UP will be dry today through midweek, lake effect snow showers continue across the NW wind snow belts through Tuesday. Some heavier snowfall rates across the Keweenaw today may lead to a few more inches of snowfall as well as hazardous travel conditions, so the Winter Weather Advisory continues for northern Houghton and Keweenaw Counties. Otherwise, expect much colder temperatures to work in, with sub-zero overnight lows for many spots throughout the work week. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaWhile most of the UP will be dry today through midweek, lake effect snow showers continue across the NW wind snow belts through Tuesday.
