Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 03/09
It looks like today will be our last day of cold weather for awhile. High today will be 25 so get out today for some last chance riding. Saturday thru all next week it doesn’t look good with temps in the 50’s. Riding for the entire area will be spotty. You will find some good riding along with poor and very icy. Expect bare spots and ice. It looks like this may be the last hoorah so get out and enjoy one more weekend of riding. It is best to ride early in the day before the trails get soft. We will keep you updated. GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY – The groomers are out today doing the best they can with what they have to work with. Expect trails to be poor around towns and fair to good once you get out on the trails. It is best to trailer to Wakefield and ride from there. Trail 2 from Ironwood to Wakefield is poor. You will encounter bare spots and ice. There is a small detour on 160 that is marked. You have to ride the side of the road on VanDer Hagen from Sunset Road to the railroad tracks. Trail 11S logging is still ongoing closer to the Wisconsin boarder signs are posted so use caution. Logging trucks have the right of way so please pull over when you see them.. On 11N, use caution around the water spot (it is now broke open so please use extra caution) signs are posted. Trail 11N and 160 closer to the lake snow will again be marginal. Use caution on corners they may be extremely icy. LAKE GOGEBIC AREA GROOMERS -Groomers went out to drag the trails doing the best they can for what they have to work with. Trails will be poor around towns and again once you get out in the woods trails will be fair to good depending on the sun exposure. It is best to ride early in the day. Logging is planned on Trail 1S about 1 mile north of Fishtales they have not started yet but use caution signs are posted. U.P.THUNDER RIDERS OF WATERSMEET – Reports they received 6 inches of new snow last night. They will not go out and groom today with temps on the rise tomorrow. Trails will be poor around towns with some fair to good riding once you get out on the trails. Expect bare spots and ice. ABOUT THE ICE: There is no such thing as "safe ice" due to underwater currents. If you choose to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for specific information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk. Here are a few gas station updates. The gas station in Paulding is closed, so plan ahead for filling up. On the up side the gas station in Marenisco is now open.
