St. Ignace Trail Report – 03/07
Things are looking good around here. Cold nights and tepid days are the story right now. Sun and daytime temps in the very low 30s are causing some melting, but have not hurt the trails one bit. Getting into/out of town is still no issue on the main trails. Side roads have pavement, so get on the banks where you can. Trails in the woods are looking as good as ever, trails in the sun and still holding good for now. I expect them to last through next week no problem as we have 8-12” ice base, and 2-6” workable snow on top. This weekend the temps are going to be freezing at night, and mid-30s during the day, so expect a little melting, and most likely the trails getting a bit choppy from the soft snow. Groomers will flatten things down in the late evenings so they will refreeze and be good to go the next day. Extended forecast is all over the place, some calling for snow later this weekend, others rain. Doesn’t matter that much for this weekend, trails will be in good shape. It sounds like once we get through this weekend we will be in a good just below freezing maintain mode – which will nothing but extent our season! Our club has PLENTY of grooming miles left this season, so we will be able to run right through April 1 if we don’t get any rain. Watch for some ice to develop in the bottom of the corners by the end of the weekend, and be courteous to fellow riders. Make the most out of what we have left in a semi-successful season! Mackinac Island Ice Bridge: Although there looks like there is a lot more ice in the straits, and appears to be frozen across to the island, that is not the case. The ice is not stable, and I have seen sheets moving in the area with different cracks developing daily. It is March, I doubt the bridge is not going to happen this year, sorry.
