Michigan Trail Report

Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 12/26

Our temps will only be in the low 30’s today and high of 25 on Saturday. They are calling for snow showers through the weekend and our nights will be in the single digits. This will help with our wet spots.

The Gogebic Range Trail Authority Report:
Trail 2 between Marenisco and Korpela Road has a two mile detour TFN due to a bridge washout. The rest of Trail 2 was groomed today and is in fair condition. Trail 8 to Tula was groomed Tuesday and is in good condition. Trail 160 is Fair with many wet spots and be alert for logging operations. Trail 11 South is closed for the season due to logging.

Lake Gogebic Groomer’s Report:
Although we did have groomers on the trails yesterday it was mostly to fill in water holes. Our trails are still in poor to fair condition with wet areas still posing a problem. We do expect much colder temps this weekend which should greatly improve conditions. We have received an additional 6- 8 inches or more of wet snow over this last week which should pack nicely.

Trails 8 east and 1 north are in the best condition. Trail 13 north is in fair condition with some bad spots to watch out for. Trail 8 west is in fair to poor condition with a couple of very wet spots. Do not get off the trail here as conditions are much worse off trail…even if it looks like nice snow there will be a lot of water underneath. Trail 13 south is in fair condition until you get to the south end of it where there are a couple of really big wet holes. Trail 1 south is rideable but not in great shape due to water. Watch for a change on trail 1 South from Rd. 8800 to Marenisco. We’ve been encountering more water problems in this area and have rerouted…just watch for signs. These water problems are beyond our control and are everywhere. It’s just a combination of a wet fall followed by a 90-inch insulating blanket of snow in November, followed by some recent warm ups. We are set up for when the cold does come (20 or below is best) as the trails have been packed and will freeze better now. This next week is looking really good with much colder temps and more snow! Keep checking back and I will update as conditions change.

The Watersmeet Groomer’s report:
Groomers report conditions are good with a few fair areas where there are wet spots on Trail 2 West and 13 South, but you are able to get around these problem areas. Follow the orange barrels and stay on trail going across the Cisco Chain. Please ride with caution..

Please remember groomers are out both day and night, so watch for them, Please pull over or at least slow down and wait for the operator to signal you by whenever you see them. Groomers have the right of way.

JUST ONE MORE REMINDER: PLEASE STAY ON MARKED TRAILS. RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN RESULT IN THE CLUBS LOSING EASEMENT FOR THAT TRAIL AND IT CAN ALSO RESULT IN A POSSIBLE TICKET FOR YOU.
