St. Ignace Trail Report – Straits Area Snowmobile Club – 01/04
Hell week was just that, but not because of traffic, it was the yo-yo weather and conditions. Overall we have only groomed a few times this season due to the lack of snow, and warm temp – but believe it or not we are still in pretty darn good shape. As of today we have no major issues to report across any of our 101 miles of trail. Things are thin and soft, but snow covered. Things are mostly flat, but enough to cover the rocks. It did get warm enough to melt a little yesterday and last night again – things are soft today, but the bottom is supposed to drop out of the temps this afternoon, and we will be in the teens until next week. That will freeze in a near perfect trail base (if we can keep the darn 4x4s off) and we will be sitting ready for that next snowfall. We will need 3-6″ of system snow and we will go from poor- to near excellent conditions overnight. For now, I keep our rating at poor to reflect the very thin base, and icy conditions. The forecast is calling for a ton of lake effect in surrounding areas – which typically only tease us, so I don’t see our conditions changing much. Some variation on the winds may give us a nice surprise though. I do have a bit of trail candy for you, this is yesturday, just outside of Iggy on the RR Grade. Looking pretty decent!
