Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 03/27

Jay is out riding trails in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. He has ridden north out of Houghton and into Copper Harbor and said trails are in good condition, especially north of Lake Linden! Plows are out clearing snow again from roads at road crossings, but Jay said even the reroute stretch by Mohawk got pretty well covered by fresh snow and Brockway also! Thanks again Jay! We look forward to any further updates you or any others can provide from today as I personally will not be riding today. ~ Lisa

This will be a long detailed post so please skip by if not interested in the best possible condition update I can give…..

Conditions in the Keweenaw north of the bridge….

Everything north of Calumet was in very good spring riding condition. Trail 3,124,132,134 and 135 had really no issues and were smooth and good condition….. with the exception of bare spots right close to towns, bare road crossings, the street in Copper Harbor is bare – which requires road riding to get to restaurants, etc.

The reroute on trail #3 south of Mohawk was bare in spots and whooped up but still passable.

Trail #3 south of Lake Linden into Houghton got progressively worse when we rode it into Houghton last night – meaning bare spots, stretches of bare spots at intersections etc. it was definitely “passable” as we did it, but wouldn’t have been recommended. Let’s just say for the “diehard” won’t throw in the towel rider, simply wanting to get in and out of Houghton. We did not personally ride trail #17 into Hancock but heard it was getting rough. Trail 122 should be avoided also.

Now all that to say ….. by the time we headed north out of Houghton trail #3 was a good deal better just from the 2 inches of snow that fell. The new snowfall was very wet and heavy though and there is supposed to be a pretty significant warm up tomorrow…..

Trailer parking is still available at Vansville Bar and I believe The Trailside Lodge. I am not personally aware of any other businesses that offer “staging” north of the bridge, so if anyone knows of any please list them below!

I believe that south of the bridge had very similar conditions from what everyone was saying. Please feel free to comment with any specific condition reports you have so others can benefit.

After Wednesday temps are supposed to drop again and there is snow in the forecast ….. so who knows what Thursday, Friday and Saturday will bring! (I personally have learned not to rely on forecasts as for example yesterday’s snow was forecasted as up to an inch and a half of rain and originally they forecasted rain for yesterday all day – would have been very bummed to have gone home Sunday and missed out on yesterday’s riding!) Trails officially remain open through the 31st.

This is the Keweenaw Snowmobile Trail System Report for Tuesday, March 27, 2018.

Snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open and in Fair to good, end of season condition. Trails on the south end are showing end of season wear and their groomers have been pulled off the trails. The trails on the north end are still in pretty good shape. Groomers on the North end are not out today because of warm temperatures. They hope to go out Thursday and Friday.

Trail 133 is now closed for the rest of the season, due to logging. Please respect this closure and stay off the trail. There is still plenty of good riding on the rest of the Keweenaw Snowmobile Clubs trail system. You can still get in and out of Gay via trail 122/124.

Remember when you’re out on the trails to watch out for the groomers. They have the right away.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, drive safely. The signs on the trail are there for riders’ safety so please DO Not remove or destroy them.
