Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 12/23
Greetings Anxious Sledders, I’ve been waiting for a weather forecast that had some good news in it before I unleashed these faster than lightning index fingers on this year’s rendition of the trail report that 8 or 10 of you so eagerly await. For those of you that are new to this, we are Keith and Sandy and we own Fay’s Motel just north of Grayling. We have easy access to the trails, an acre of parking in the back for your tow vehicle and trailer, clean comfortable rooms and it’s been said by 25 reputable people that we are fairly easy to get along with. I manage the trails in the Grayling area and have been grooming for 18 years, the groomers are stationed here and Fay’s is the starting point for grooming activities. Trails: I think it’s important to add the volunteer part as there are many sledders that are under the impression that groomer drivers are paid. Most are not. The majority of our guys snowmobile and grooming is a great way for them to help provide smooth, safe trails. Some of us just like to groom and get a kick out of riding through the woods on heavy equipment. Weather: Right now things are not looking too good for the next 7-10 days. Underground was calling for 3-5 on Thurs and Fri and it has just backed off of that notion. So we wait. We will get word out as soon as we have something positive to pass along. We started trail maintenance and preparation the 1st of Oct and all trails are ready and we are just waiting for snow. We put in 195 hours of brushing, 135 hours signing and 52 plus hours of grading along with 87 hours of pre-season maintenance on the tractors and drags. These hours and the hours that will be expended on grooming and maint. during the upcoming season are ALL UNPAID VOLUNTEER HOURS.
What to expect? After the last two or so years who knows. We look no further than 10 days out using the local prognosticators, weather underground and our favorite is John Dee. We also make use of the very sophisticated method of looking out the window each and every morning. If it’s white and we need to shovel and plow than odds are it snowed.
