Ontonagon Trail Report – 12/30

Trail Report: The boys were out working yesterday and found that our trails run the gambit from very poor to very good. It’s pretty bumpy out there, but most of those moguls are dirt, not snow & ice. Without more snow, we cannot give you a smooth ride. The closer you get to Lake Superior, the less snow there is. It is still early season riding here and fairly technical. Go slow and keep your eyes open. Enjoy the scenery, the trees are full of snow and it’s beautiful out there.

Trail 137 – The railroad grade between Ontonagon and Rockland was panned yesterday. It is in good condition but gets thin and drops to fair condition the closer you get to Ontonagon.

Trail 12 – We are working on this trail today between Ontonagon and Greenland. Ride with caution and check for the groomer location on the Groomer Tracker App. There is very little snow on this trail. There is a huge water hole in the wooded section that parallels The Norwich Road west of Ontonagon. It is ridable if you skim it, but it is 3′ deep. It should freeze over in the next few days. You can turn around and run the shoulder of The Norwich Road and avoid this area. The highline section between Norwich Road and Potato Farm Road is freshly groomed and in very good condition. The straight section that runs along the north side of LP Walsh Road just east of Hwy 64 has open running water in every low spot that doesn’t have a culvert or bridge. We recommend you ride the snow bank along the shoulder for this 4 miles. It is legal to do so, as this is a county road. Please ride with caution when you share the road with autos and trucks.

Trail 1 – From White Pine to Silver City is ridable, but in poor condition. With so little snow, the driveways are very elevated and it doesn’t take much speed to go airborne. There are many wet spots, but most are shallow or you can ride around them. There is one large waterhole that we have marked with signs and cones about 4/10ths of a mile south of Silver City. There are driveways on both sides of this hazard. Please ride out to the highway, run the shoulder and then right back into the trail. It is illegal to ride on or ride the plowed shoulder of any Michigan state highway. (in this area: M64-M28-M38). When the trail runs along the hwy, you are allowed to come up onto the shoulder to go around a hazard or cross a bridge when necessary, but then you MUST return back to the trail. County deputies, state troopers and DNR law enforcement will write tickets for this infraction.

There are a lot of deer crossing the trails in the Silver City area, please ride with caution.

From Silver City to South Boundary Rd is thin and rough, with multiple water/mud holes. There is a bridge shut down that needs repair. You will be riding a lot of shoulder here. Please be respectful of the people who live along this stretch and stay on the trail and out of their yards.

From South Boundary Rd to The Porkies Ski Hill is very thin and very wet & muddy. Ride the shoulder as needed and be cautious of auto traffic. Trail 1 to Lake of the Clouds looked clear, but we have not made it up there yet. I’m sure it’s getting bumpy going up and down the final hill. We will get to this trail midweek.

Trail 11N (South Boundary Rd) to Trail 102 – This trail also looks good, but we have not gotten over to it yet. We are hearing it is getting a bit rough. We will be grooming this by mid-week.

Trail 101 – This trail was groomed yesterday and is in very good condition.

Trail 13 – the boys groomed this trail yesterday. It is in good condition on the west end to fair condition on the east end.
The section between the river crossing and Trail 137 is in terrible shape. There is massive ATV damage and the only way we’ll be able to fix it is more snow. It’s about a 1/2 mile of trail. We would recommend the alternate route of riding the shoulder of Victoria Road in this section to and from Trail 137. Trail 13 between Trail 137 and Rockland is now groomed and in good shape.

We will have more info for you as we get to the rest of the system. Please remember, 10 days ago we had bare grass in Ontonagon. We are doing our best to get the trails in shape, but we need more snow and cold to get er done right!
