Ironwood Trail Report – Gogebic Range Trail Authority – 02/27
Wow, what a tiring week so far and the snow just keeps falling. Groomers are running 20+ hours a day right now via 100% all-volunteer staff. As of right now, Trail 2 from Hurley, WI to Marenisco, MI has been completely groomed and cleared of hazards; many sections required multiple passes to deal with 4-7′ drifts. Trail 160 is actively being groomed and busted open. Our other groomer continues to have wiring issues, so trail 8 will hopefully be groomed this evening. Riders need to ride extremely cautiously on ungroomed trails as trees may be down or large snow-drift walls across trails. There is 16-30" of fresh snow on top of the 3-4 feet of base, however as the week goes on the powder continues to settle. Due to the amount of snow it will take many grooming runs to pack the snow into a nice hard base. We strongly discourage off-trail riding for any shorter tracked sleds or inexperienced riders. You step off your snowmobile and you go chest deep, things can turn very dire very quickly…please respect our emergency services and don’t put yourself in a bad situation because you will drag others into it as they come to help you. Temps for the next 16 days look perfect for snowmobiling. Remember all those years you wish you could snowmobile in March close to home? THIS IS THE YEAR!! Don’t quit on the season, the best riding of the season is officially here.
