KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports​ – 3/8

Wow! The sunrise (shown in photos provided by Glenn Rowe and Cathy Rowe from their morning route grooming) and sunset (my photos from Brockway)was breathtaking today!

It was an amazing Spring riding day today! Trails were flat for the most part ….. we did encounter some chop on trail 3 tonight coming south from Copper Harbor, but that was to be expected with warm temps and high traffic.

As for snow consistency….. well yes, you guessed it…. mashed potatoes for the most part! As for snow cover on trails….still very good. We encountered 3 thin/bare very small areas on trail 134/135 tonight…. other than that, all good with the exception of getting in and out of towns, especially Houghton/Hancock.

We, personally did not have any issues with engine temperatures on the sleds – Neal was riding a Ski Doo Summit 146 and I was riding an awesome new Ski Doo Backcountry X 146 (huge thanks to Houghton Powersports for helping me in the process of deciding what my next sled should be!). Neither of us had any issues keeping the sleds cool.

I have also included the CURRENT(11:10pm Saturday 3/7) photos of the trail through Hancock – I’m certain by tomorrow these areas will be bare. There are ways to avoid having to travel through town by staging at different areas north of Houghton/Hancock, such as The Trailside Lodge or Vansville Bar – I would suggest calling ahead to verify availability at these locations.

If you have any questions regarding lodging, routes visit a trails, staging, etc please feel free to ask! Late season riding is not for everyone, but for those that choose to continue riding, I would love to help you have the best experience possible.

I will be riding the trail system all day tomorrow and will update a condition report then.

Snowmobile trails are in good to very good condition throughout the Keweenaw. Trails are groomed daily throughout the region.

There is logging a mile north of Phoenix on Trail 3. Please pay attention to the signs and stay on the trail or this trail will be CLOSED.
Trail 133 is closed for logging. The trail section from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden (a portion of Trail 3) and the Freda Trail (Trails 121 & 120) will be closed the entire season for repair.
Valley Sno Drifters trail from Lake Linden to Dreamland Restaurant & Bar is OPEN!
The Portage Lift Bridge is open to snowmobile traffic.
Trail 133 is closed for logging.

Remember when you’re out on the trails to watch out for the groomers. They have the right away.

Please stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, drive safely. The signs on the trails are there for rider’s safety so please DO NOT remove or destroy them.
