Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 03/03
FREDERIC / GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic – 3/3 Good Morning from Lake Margrethe, its about 11 degrees out this morning. Here we are 3 days into March in whats left of the most dismal sled season in the 25 plus years that Sledheads of Frederic has been open. The U.P. was certainly the place to be riding this season and I believe it still is. The snow conditions around Frederic havent changed much since this past weekend. Still nice and white out there but icy underneath. The forcast for the next few days isnt anything that sounds positive either. There have been a few sleds out and about this week including the group of 4 guys that stopped in yesterday and they were going to try to ride up to the bridge. I told them to let me know if they made it. I do think it was possible thing to do yesterday. Barring a giant storm which of course is possible that there wont be much more riding around here this season. Pic below is the four guys before heading to the bridge and they had rode from 4 mile road to Frederic. On tuesday I saw the Roscommon Groomer making snow dust and grooming on the trail along I 75 from the Ramada to 4 mile road so that was a good site. Also one thing I found interesting on my trip to NYC a couple weeks ago is that most of the food delivery guys in NYC that deliver on their bicycles have gauntlets on their bikes. To bad we dont have the problem they have in South Dakota where they have snow but trails dont open till the 15th of December. The best day of riding that I had last year was on November 28 when Big John and I got in a nice 60 mile ride after a nice dumping of snow that morning. Everyone always asks me what I think the season is going to be like and my standard answer is I will tell you in April. I need to get some time in at Sledheads and get the front room ready for the season as I tend to let it get a little messy during the summer when I am not open. I put the winter signage back up last week on a nice 60 degree day. I picked up trail permits this week too but I am not putting one on my sled till we have rideable snow. I did see both Kalkaska and Grayling groomers out doing trail maintenance in the past month or so. Thats about it for now. Thanks for checking in. This system appears to be more straightforward than the previous one. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> 8:40 AM ET radar update: Widespread stratiform rain near central MI and in the lower elevations, with a wintery mix over the hills of northern lower, and snow near the tip of the mitt, eastern upper, and in the highest elevations. Precipitation will continue through the day and should remain light. Heavier precipitation will likely be this evening and tonight over areas north of M-55. The first polar front will sweep through the Midwest on Thanksgiving day bringing temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below average. Lows below zero are expected for some across the north and in the single digits down to I80. Highs this weekend will only be in the single digits and teens for areas down to I80. Dangerous wind chills of -20 degrees or colder are increasingly likely, especially north of I90. The graphic below shows the temperatures on Sunday morning.
Another polar front will move through next week bringing even colder temperatures.
