Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 12/23

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Snowmobile Club – 12/23

Happy Blizzard Friday! The snow and wind have kicked into high gear within our trail system. Below is a wrap up of conditions:

Trail 3 from Toivola to Copper Harbor, Trail 17 from Hancock to Calumet, Trail 134, High Rock Spur (see below) and Trail 132 have all groomed. There are small water spots on all trails so ride with caution! ⚠️
High Rock Spur is Caution Taped Off, there are many water spots and areas that need a bit more attention, planning to get it fully opened next week. If you choose to ride, please use an abundance of caution in this area! ⚠️

Logging is complete on Trail 132, but continues on the shared portion of Trail 3. As mentioned before, mind the speed limit and yield to any logging traffic!

Trail 124 and Trail 133 will likely be opened Tuesday December 27th.

Finally some great news, the Trail 122 reroute has been approved! However, Trail 122 will be closed until logging is complete mid to late January. More updates to come!

Stay safe out there if riding during the storm, the wind and snow have created whiteout conditions and drifts across almost our entire system.

Grooming is on pause until the storm passes, safety of our team is number 1.

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 12/23

Did you ride anywhere yesterday?
Zach Tusek shared this photo and said, “We rode from houghton to copper yesterday and it was the best riding I’ve had in years. Put on 125 miles on amazing trails, very low traffic.”
If you haven’t already, download the Groomer Tracker ap and subscribe to the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club Trail system. You will receive up to the moment trail, grooming, information.
Thank you for sharing Zach. Be safe and enjoy the rest of your trip.

Are trail gates closed on Trail 5 from Champion up to Big Bay and other trails around there or can we still sneak out? With this much snow, we can probably can’t see the gates! Lol.

Widespread 8-12 inches are forecast; higher amounts in excess of 2 feet are forecast across the higher terrain of Marquette and Baraga Counties into Thursday morning. Note: A sharp gradient in snow totals is expected just inland from the Great Lake-especially along the Lake Superior shoreline in Baraga and Marquette Counties. KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports >> What is YOUR average miles riding, each season and how many will you end up with this season?
Less than 15 hours ago Ryan Bennet decided there wasn’t chance he was missing out on a little end of the season throttle therapy. Ryan arrived at Krupps Resortearly this morning after the long drive from Crntral Illinois, slept for a little bit and then hit the trail early.
Ryan is a long time rider of the Keweenaw and usually shares full reviews of his rides so others can see current conditions. In typical winters Ryan will log a LARGE amount of miles for a season along with high mileage days. In the 2021/22 season Ryan put on over 5200 miles and a 377 mile single day is not completely unusual for him!
This trip will definitely create a bit of a challenge for him in regards to be able to ride a usual and typical amount of miles as the Portage Lake Lift Bridge was closed prior to the season ending. This means Ryan was not able to head north into the Keweenaw this morning. Trail conditions took a pretty big hit further south yesterday, with the warm temps and sun, this will limit his mileage, along with the fact that trail 13 is closed.
Early this morning Ryan headed from Krupp’s to Houghton and shared a photo of the bridge and canal. Ryan said, “Made it from Krupps to Houghton and back, Trail 3 is fair to good, excellent late season conditions for not grooming!”
Thanks for sharing Ryan, we look forward to hearing how the rest of your day goes! Enjoy! #keweenaw #snowphotos

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports >> Chasing snow has definitely been the norm this season and you had to be ready to leave with a moments notice. We can all hope next year will be nothing like this year!
‘Snownlyfans’ decided yesterday to chase some snow himself, from Sebewaing to Mass City - an 8 hour drive! After arriving last night at Adventure Motel, Snownlyfans got started early this morning and rode from Mass City to Houghton, Houghton to Sidnaw and back to Mass City! He already has 195 miles on today. Snownlyfans shared some photos and comments on riding. He said, “Can’t tell you his much snow I was pushing with my bumper from Mass City to Krupp's Mini Mart, but it’s DEEP! Continued up to the South Range Pub, but it was closed 😩 Rode up to Houghton and then back south. Tried to ride into Sidnaw but unfortunately some of the trail was plowed. Oh well…..195 mile day!”
Thanks for sharing Snownlyfans! Glad you were able to get some throttle therapy in!
