Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 02/08

This is the Keweenaw trail system report for Friday, February 8, 2013.

The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open. The groomers are out working on the trails and overall the trails are in good to very good condition. There is some logging being done on trails 122 & 133 so please watch for the signs and be aware.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.

Remember to watch out for the groomers and deer when you’re out on the trails…..they have the right of way!!

Please be aware that if you snowmobile on U.S. Coast Guard property you could face federal trespass charges.

St. Ignace Trail Report – 02/07

Cold snowy and beautiful! We got 3-4′ last night and still snowing. Trails are in very good to excellent condition with no problems to report. A very few minor rocks poking through in Moran, other then that our whole system is in good shape. Off trail has layers of new snow for some decent powder riding now (not a fantastic as Newberry, but still tons-o-fun).
Groomers are in good shape and running on a regular basis. Wayne is swapping #5 with Bob today to bring #6 in town for minor maintenance hopefully on Friday. Grooming will continue nightly through the weekend.

Ice Bridge:
There is now ice to Mackinac Island. 2 guys walked across finding 2-3′ on Monday. The first sleds crossed on Thursday. There is no tree line, and it is not considered safe at this time.

Pond Hockey:
The 7th year of the LaBatt Blue UP Pond Hockey Championships is on for Feb 15-17th, and will be held on the Bay downtown St. Ignace. Over 170 teams are signed up for the 2nd largest tourney in the country. 30 rinks are currently under construction. This year the beer/warming tent will be on the beach next to the bay to keep your feet try. Ice bowling and a bon fire between the tent and rinks give something for everyone to do. Live entertainment throughout the day. Hope to see you there!
