Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 01/17

9.5 inches over the weekend – and it’s still snowing. Both cross country and snowmobile trails are in great shape! A reminder to snowmobilers – please stay off the ice!!! Use the bridge! A rider went through the ice on Portage Lake last week -not a good thing!

The snowmobile trails from TwinLakes to CopperHarbor are open, and groomers are out working on them. Trails are reported to be in good to very good condition except for the High Rock trail which is in poor to fair condition due to low snow.

Remember to watch out for the groomers when you’re out on the trails…….they have the right of way!!
There is logging on a short portion of Trail 133 between Gay and Lac La Belle.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.

Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 01/17

The snow keeps coming and we have topped 100 inches to date. It is a little short from last years 113" but more is in the forecast through Wednesday, so we may do some catching up.

GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY are out grooming daily, reporting trails are in good to very good condition. The wet spots are frozen over. They are still logging on 11S and 160, so use caution and watch for logging trucks. Be aware there is a little icy area on the corners of Trail 2 between Ramsay and Wakefield.
Lake Gogebic Area groomers are grooming daily. With all the new snow they received, the trails are in good to very good condition. However, some corners are icy, so use caution.

Watersmeet Area groomers are also grooming daily. They are reporting the trails are in fair to good condition.

ABOUT THE ICE:
It’s time for our usual caution. There is no such thing as "safe ice" due to underwater currents. If you plan to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for more information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk.

Our 800# is down so when calling you will not get a recording. Hopefully it will be fixed soon!!! Check back for updates and check out our webcams around the area at westernup.info ….
