Drummond Island Trail Report – Drummond Island Snow Report – 01/13

SNOW GAUGE REPORT: The snow just keeps settling! With only 3 inches on the ground across most of the Island any and all snow fun has ground to a halt. Snow is in the forecast for the weekend. Do the Snow Dance!

SNOWMOBILING FANS: Ice in the bays appears to be holding up and building with each new cold day. The International Ice Bridge to Canada is still scheduled to go in January 14, 2011. Keep watching here for updates!

The Snowmobile Trails are still officially closed. The groomers need more snow for a base. Rocks and boulders dot every trail at this time.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING FANS: The Rainbow X-Country Ski Trail needs to be re-groomed. All trails are OPEN for skiiers but not groomed as of this posting. (1/13/2011) Many of the local skiiers have hit the ice – check for ice thickness/safety before you head out, but skiing on the bays of Drummond is as peaceful as it gets.

SNOWSHOEING FANS: All trails are open for snowshoeing. But for the most part, a good pair of snow boots are STILL all you need to get out and enjoy the trails. With the base standing at only 3 inches snowshoes are more cumbersome than helpful.

ICE SKATING FANS: The local rink is open and waiting! Grab your skates, a thermos of hot cocoa and head down to the Townhall. The ice is slick and fast!

Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 01/13

Welcome to Winter Wonderland….We received 9" of new snow since yesterday with 21" on the ground.

GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY are out grooming daily reporting trails are all in good to very good condition. 11S is in good shape, watch for logging trucks, signs are posted where they are logging. 160 is good with the exception of the portion they are logging by the Wisconsin boarder this part is fair.

Lake Gogebic Area groomers are out. Reporting with the new snow they received all trails are in good to very good conditions.

Watersmeet Area groomers went out again on Monday night. They are reporting the trails are in fair conditions. Some place are worse some are better. Use caution in the Bond Falls area they are logging in this area. So watch for logging trucks.

ABOUT THE ICE:
It’s time for our usual caution. There is no such thing as "safe ice" due to underwater currents. If you plan to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for more information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk.

Our 800# is down so when calling you will not get a recording. Hopefully it will be fixed soon!!! Check back for updates and check out our webcams around the area at westernup.info ….
